Chapter 10

The Word Brings Salvation

1

Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for [the Israelites] [is] for [their] salvation.

Ἀδελφοί μὲν ἐμῆς τῆς καρδίας ἡ εὐδοκία καὶ ἡ δέησις πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν εἰς σωτηρίαν Adelphoi men emēs tēs kardias hē eudokia kai hē deēsis pros ton Theon hyper autōn eis sōtērian — NA/TR · 1

For I testify about them that they are zealous for God, but not on the basis of knowledge.

γὰρ μαρτυρῶ αὐτοῖς ὅτι ἔχουσιν ζῆλον Θεοῦ ἀλλ’ οὐ κατ’ ἐπίγνωσιν gar martyrō autois hoti echousin zēlon Theou all’ ou kat’ epignōsin — NA/TR · 2

Because they were ignorant - of God’s righteousness and sought to establish [their] own -, vvv they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

γὰρ ἀγνοοῦντες τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην καὶ ζητοῦντες στῆσαι τὴν ἰδίαν δικαιοσύνην οὐχ ὑπετάγησαν τῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ δικαιοσύνῃ gar agnoountes tēn tou Theou dikaiosynēn kai zētountes stēsai tēn idian dikaiosynēn ouch hypetagēsan tē tou Theou dikaiosynē — NA/TR · 3

For Christ [is] [the] end of the law, to bring righteousness to everyone who believes.

γὰρ Χριστὸς τέλος νόμου εἰς δικαιοσύνην παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι gar Christos telos nomou eis dikaiosynēn panti tō pisteuonti — NA/TR · 4

For concerning the righteousness that is by the law, Moses writes -: “The man [who] does these things will live by them.”

γὰρ ὅτι τὴν δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου Μωϋσῆς γράφει ὅτι Ὁ ἄνθρωπος ποιήσας αὐτὰ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτῇ gar hoti tēn dikaiosynēn tēn ek tou nomou Mōusēs graphei hoti Ho anthrōpos poiēsas auta zēsetai en autē — NA/TR · 5

But the righteousness that is by faith says -: “vvv Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down…)

δὲ ἡ δικαιοσύνη ἐκ πίστεως λέγει οὕτως Μὴ εἴπῃς ἐν σου τῇ καρδίᾳ Τίς ἀναβήσεται εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν τοῦτ’ ἔστιν καταγαγεῖν Χριστὸν de hē dikaiosynē ek pisteōs legei houtōs Mē eipēs en sou tē kardia Tis anabēsetai eis ton ouranon tout’ estin katagagein Christon — NA/TR · 6

or, ‘Who will descend into the Abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from [the] dead).

ἤ Τίς καταβήσεται εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ἀναγαγεῖν Χριστὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν ē Tis katabēsetai eis tēn abysson tout’ estin anagagein Christon ek nekrōn — NA/TR · 7

But what does it say? “The word is near you; [it is] in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:

Ἀλλὰ τί λέγει τὸ ῥῆμά ἐστιν Ἐγγύς σου ἐν σου τῷ στόματί καὶ ἐν σου τῇ καρδίᾳ τοῦτ’ ἔστιν τὸ ῥῆμα τῆς πίστεως ὃ κηρύσσομεν Alla ti legei to rhēma estin Engys sou en sou tō stomati kai en sou tē kardia tout’ estin to rhēma tēs pisteōs ho kēryssomen — NA/TR · 8

that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus [is] Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from [the] dead, you will be saved.

ὅτι ἐὰν ὁμολογήσῃς ἐν σου τῷ στόματί Ἰησοῦν Κύριον καὶ πιστεύσῃς ἐν σου τῇ καρδίᾳ ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν σωθήσῃ hoti ean homologēsēs en sou tō stomati Iēsoun Kyrion kai pisteusēs en sou tē kardia hoti ho Theos ēgeiren auton ek nekrōn sōthēsē — NA/TR · 9

For with [your] heart [you] believe [and are] justified, and with [your] mouth [you] confess [and are] saved.

γὰρ καρδίᾳ πιστεύεται εἰς δικαιοσύνην δὲ στόματι ὁμολογεῖται εἰς σωτηρίαν gar kardia pisteuetai eis dikaiosynēn de stomati homologeitai eis sōtērian — NA/TR · 10

[It is] just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”

γὰρ ἡ γραφή Λέγει Πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων ἐπ’ αὐτῷ οὐ καταισχυνθήσεται gar hē graphē Legei Pas ho pisteuōn ep’ autō ou kataischynthēsetai — NA/TR · 11

For there is no difference between Jew and Greek: The same Lord [is Lord] of all, [and] gives richly to all who call on Him,

γάρ ἐστιν οὐ διαστολὴ τε Ἰουδαίου καὶ Ἕλληνος γὰρ ὁ αὐτὸς Κύριος πάντων πλουτῶν εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἐπικαλουμένους αὐτόν gar estin ou diastolē te Ioudaiou kai Hellēnos gar ho autos Kyrios pantōn ploutōn eis pantas tous epikaloumenous auton — NA/TR · 12

for, “Everyone who… calls on the name of [the] Lord will be saved.”

γὰρ Πᾶς ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου σωθήσεται gar Pas hos an epikalesētai to onoma Kyriou sōthēsetai — NA/TR · 13

How then can they call on [the One] vvv in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in [the One] of whom vvv they have not heard? And how can they hear without [someone] to preach?

Πῶς οὖν ἐπικαλέσωνται εἰς ὃν οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν δὲ πῶς πιστεύσωσιν οὗ οὐκ ἤκουσαν δὲ πῶς ἀκούσωσιν χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος Pōs oun epikalesōntai eis hon ouk episteusan de pōs pisteusōsin hou ouk ēkousan de pōs akousōsin chōris kēryssontos — NA/TR · 14

And how can they preach unless… they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful [are] the feet of those who bring good news…!”

δὲ πῶς κηρύξωσιν ἐὰν μὴ ἀποσταλῶσιν καθὼς γέγραπται Ὡς ὡραῖοι οἱ πόδες τῶν εὐαγγελιζομένων τὰ ἀγαθά de pōs kēryxōsin ean mē apostalōsin kathōs gegraptai Hōs hōraioi hoi podes tōn euangelizomenōn ta agatha — NA/TR · 15

But not all of them welcomed the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”

Ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντες ὑπήκουσαν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ γὰρ Ἠσαΐας λέγει Κύριε τίς ἐπίστευσεν ἡμῶν τῇ ἀκοῇ All’ ou pantes hypēkousan tō euangeliō gar Ēsaias legei Kyrie tis episteusen hēmōn tē akoē — NA/TR · 16

Consequently, faith [comes] by hearing, and hearing by [the] word of Christ.

ἄρα ἡ πίστις ἐξ ἀκοῆς δὲ ἡ ἀκοὴ διὰ ῥήματος Χριστοῦ ara hē pistis ex akoēs de hē akoē dia rhēmatos Christou — NA/TR · 17

But I ask, vvv did they not hear…? Indeed [they did]: “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”

Ἀλλὰ λέγω οὐκ ἤκουσαν μὴ μενοῦνγε αὐτῶν ὁ φθόγγος ἐξῆλθεν Εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν καὶ αὐτῶν τὰ ῥήματα εἰς τὰ πέρατα τῆς οἰκουμένης Alla legō ouk ēkousan mē menounge autōn ho phthongos exēlthen Eis pasan tēn gēn kai autōn ta rhēmata eis ta perata tēs oikoumenēs — NA/TR · 18

I ask instead, {did} Israel not… understand? First, Moses says: “I will make you jealous… by [those who are] not a nation; I will make you angry… by a nation without understanding.”

λέγω Ἀλλὰ Ἰσραὴλ οὐκ μὴ ἔγνω πρῶτος Μωϋσῆς λέγει Ἐγὼ παραζηλώσω ὑμᾶς ἐπ’ οὐκ ἔθνει παροργιῶ ὑμᾶς ἐπ’ ἔθνει ἀσυνέτῳ legō Alla Israēl ouk mē egnō prōtos Mōusēs legei Egō parazēlōsō hymas ep’ ouk ethnei parorgiō hymas ep’ ethnei asynetō — NA/TR · 19

And Isaiah boldly says: “I was found by those who vvv did not seek Me; vvv I revealed Myself to those who vvv did not ask for Me.”

δὲ Ἠσαΐας ἀποτολμᾷ καὶ λέγει Εὑρέθην ἐν τοῖς μὴ ζητοῦσιν ἐμὲ ἐγενόμην ἐμφανὴς τοῖς μὴ ἐπερωτῶσιν ἐμὲ de Ēsaias apotolma kai legei Heurethēn en tois mē zētousin eme egenomēn emphanēs tois mē eperōtōsin eme — NA/TR · 20

But as for Israel he says: “All day long I have held out My hands to [a] disobedient and obstinate people.”

δὲ Πρὸς τὸν Ἰσραὴλ λέγει Ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐξεπέτασα μου τὰς χεῖράς πρὸς ἀπειθοῦντα καὶ ἀντιλέγοντα λαὸν de Pros ton Israēl legei Holēn tēn hēmeran exepetasa mou tas cheiras pros apeithounta kai antilegonta laon — NA/TR · 21
