Chapter 13
Submission to Authorities

Everyone… must submit himself to the governing authorities…, for there is no authority except… [that which is from] God. [The authorities] that exist… have been appointed by God.
Πᾶσα ψυχὴ ὑποτασσέσθω ἐξουσίαις ὑπερεχούσαις γὰρ ἔστιν οὐ ἐξουσία εἰ μὴ ὑπὸ Θεοῦ δὲ αἱ οὖσαι εἰσίν τεταγμέναι ὑπὸ Θεοῦ Pasa psychē hypotassesthō exousiais hyperechousais gar estin ou exousia ei mē hypo Theou de hai ousai eisin tetagmenai hypo Theou — NA/TR · 1

Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who [do so] will bring judgment on themselves.
ὥστε ὁ ἀντιτασσόμενος τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ ἀνθέστηκεν τῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ διαταγῇ δὲ οἱ ἀνθεστηκότες λήμψονται κρίμα ἑαυτοῖς hōste ho antitassomenos tē exousia anthestēken tē tou Theou diatagē de hoi anthestēkotes lēmpsontai krima heautois — NA/TR · 2

For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want vvv to be unafraid of the one in authority? [Then] do what [is] right, and you will have vvv his approval.
γὰρ οἱ ἄρχοντες εἰσὶν οὐκ φόβος τῷ ἀγαθῷ ἔργῳ ἀλλὰ τῷ κακῷ δὲ θέλεις μὴ φοβεῖσθαι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ποίει τὸ ἀγαθὸν καὶ ἕξεις ἐξ αὐτῆς ἔπαινον gar hoi archontes eisin ouk phobos tō agathō ergō alla tō kakō de theleis mē phobeisthai tēn exousian poiei to agathon kai hexeis ex autēs epainon — NA/TR · 3

For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for vvv he does not carry the sword in vain. He is God’s servant, an agent of retribution to the vvv vvv wrongdoer.
γὰρ ἐστιν Θεοῦ διάκονός εἰς σοὶ τὸ ἀγαθόν δὲ ἐὰν ποιῇς τὸ κακὸν φοβοῦ γὰρ οὐ φορεῖ τὴν μάχαιραν εἰκῇ γὰρ ἐστιν Θεοῦ διάκονός ἔκδικος εἰς ὀργὴν τῷ τὸ πράσσοντι κακὸν gar estin Theou diakonos eis soi to agathon de ean poiēs to kakon phobou gar ou phorei tēn machairan eikē gar estin Theou diakonos ekdikos eis orgēn tō to prassonti kakon — NA/TR · 4

Therefore [it is] necessary to submit [ to authority ], not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience.

- This is also why… you pay taxes. For [the authorities] are God’s servants, who devote themselves to vvv [their work].

Pay everyone what you owe [him]: taxes to whom taxes [are due], revenue to whom revenue [is due], respect to whom respect [is due], honor to whom honor [is due].

Love Fulfills the Law

Be indebted to no one…, except… to one another [in] love. For he who loves [his] neighbor has fulfilled [the] law.
ὀφείλετε Μηδενὶ μηδὲν εἰ μὴ τὸ ἀλλήλους ἀγαπᾶν γὰρ ὁ ἀγαπῶν τὸν ἕτερον πεπλήρωκεν νόμον opheilete Mēdeni mēden ei mē to allēlous agapan gar ho agapōn ton heteron peplērōken nomon — NA/TR · 8

- The [commandments] vvv “Do not commit adultery, vvv “Do not murder, vvv “Do not steal, vvv “Do not covet,” and any other commandments, are summed up in this [one] decree -: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

- Love vvv vvv does no wrong to [its] neighbor. Therefore love [is] [the] fulfillment of [the] law.

The Day Is Near

And [do] this, understanding the occasion. [The] hour has come for you to wake up from [your] slumber, for our salvation [is] nearer now than when we {first} believed.
Καὶ τοῦτο εἰδότες τὸν καιρόν ὥρα ὅτι ἤδη ὑμᾶς ἐγερθῆναι ἐξ ὕπνου γὰρ ἡμῶν ἡ σωτηρία ἐγγύτερον νῦν ἢ ὅτε ἐπιστεύσαμεν Kai touto eidotes ton kairon hōra hoti ēdē hymas egerthēnai ex hypnou gar hēmōn hē sōtēria engyteron nyn ē hote episteusamen — NA/TR · 11

The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near. So let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
ἡ νὺξ προέκοψεν δὲ ἡ ἡμέρα ἤγγικεν οὖν ἀποθώμεθα τὰ ἔργα τοῦ σκότους δὲ ἐνδυσώμεθα τὰ ὅπλα τοῦ φωτός hē nyx proekopsen de hē hēmera ēngiken oun apothōmetha ta erga tou skotous de endysōmetha ta hopla tou phōtos — NA/TR · 12

Let us behave decently, as in [the] daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.
περιπατήσωμεν εὐσχημόνως ὡς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μὴ κώμοις καὶ μέθαις μὴ κοίταις καὶ ἀσελγείαις μὴ ἔριδι καὶ ζήλῳ peripatēsōmen euschēmonōs hōs en hēmera mē kōmois kai methais mē koitais kai aselgeiais mē eridi kai zēlō — NA/TR · 13

Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for [the] desires of the flesh.
