Chapter 2

God’s Righteous Judgment

1

You, therefore, have no excuse, [you] who pass judgment [on another]. For on whatever grounds you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because [you who] pass judgment do the same things.

εἶ Διὸ ἀναπολόγητος ὦ ἄνθρωπε πᾶς ὁ κρίνων γὰρ ἐν ᾧ κρίνεις τὸν ἕτερον κατακρίνεις σεαυτὸν γὰρ ὁ κρίνων πράσσεις τὰ αὐτὰ ei Dio anapologētos ō anthrōpe pas ho krinōn gar en hō krineis ton heteron katakrineis seauton gar ho krinōn prasseis ta auta — NA/TR · 1

And we know that - God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

δὲ οἴδαμεν ὅτι τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ κρίμα ἐπὶ τοὺς πράσσοντας τὰ τοιαῦτα ἐστιν κατὰ ἀλήθειαν de oidamen hoti to tou Theou krima epi tous prassontas ta toiauta estin kata alētheian — NA/TR · 2

[So when] [you], O man, pass judgment on [others],… yet do the same things…, do you think - you will escape - God’s judgment?

δὲ ὁ ὦ ἄνθρωπε κρίνων τοὺς τὰ καὶ ποιῶν αὐτά τοιαῦτα πράσσοντας λογίζῃ τοῦτο ὅτι σὺ ἐκφεύξῃ τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ κρίμα de ho ō anthrōpe krinōn tous ta kai poiōn auta toiauta prassontas logizē touto hoti sy ekpheuxē to tou Theou krima — NA/TR · 3

Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, - tolerance, and patience, not realizing that - God’s kindness leads you to repentance?

ἢ καταφρονεῖς τοῦ πλούτου τῆς αὐτοῦ χρηστότητος καὶ τῆς ἀνοχῆς καὶ τῆς μακροθυμίας ἀγνοῶν ὅτι τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ χρηστὸν ἄγει σε εἰς μετάνοιάν ē kataphroneis tou ploutou tēs autou chrēstotētos kai tēs anochēs kai tēs makrothymias agnoōn hoti to tou Theou chrēston agei se eis metanoian — NA/TR · 4

But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for [the] day of wrath, [when] God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

δὲ Κατὰ σου τὴν σκληρότητά καὶ ἀμετανόητον καρδίαν θησαυρίζεις ὀργὴν σεαυτῷ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὀργῆς καὶ τοῦ Θεοῦ δικαιοκρισίας ἀποκαλύψεως de Kata sou tēn sklērotēta kai ametanoēton kardian thēsaurizeis orgēn seautō en hēmera orgēs kai tou Theou dikaiokrisias apokalypseōs — NA/TR · 5

[God] “will repay each one according to his deeds.”

ὃς Ἀποδώσει ἑκάστῳ κατὰ αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα hos Apodōsei hekastō kata autou ta erga — NA/TR · 6

To those who by perseverance in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, [He will give] eternal life.

τοῖς μὲν καθ’ ὑπομονὴν ἔργου ἀγαθοῦ ζητοῦσιν δόξαν καὶ τιμὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν αἰώνιον ζωὴν tois men kath’ hypomonēn ergou agathou zētousin doxan kai timēn kai aphtharsian aiōnion zōēn — NA/TR · 7

But for those who vvv [are] self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow wickedness, [there will be] wrath and anger.

δὲ τοῖς ἐξ ἐριθείας καὶ ἀπειθοῦσι τῇ ἀληθείᾳ δὲ πειθομένοις τῇ ἀδικίᾳ ὀργὴ καὶ θυμός de tois ex eritheias kai apeithousi tē alētheia de peithomenois tē adikia orgē kai thymos — NA/TR · 8

[There will be] trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Greek;

θλῖψις καὶ στενοχωρία ἐπὶ πᾶσαν ἀνθρώπου ψυχὴν τοῦ κατεργαζομένου τὸ κακόν τε πρῶτον Ἰουδαίου καὶ Ἕλληνος thlipsis kai stenochōria epi pasan anthrōpou psychēn tou katergazomenou to kakon te prōton Ioudaiou kai Hellēnos — NA/TR · 9

but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, first for the Jew, then for the Greek.

δὲ δόξα καὶ τιμὴ καὶ εἰρήνη παντὶ τῷ ἐργαζομένῳ τὸ ἀγαθόν τε Ἰουδαίῳ πρῶτον καὶ Ἕλληνι de doxa kai timē kai eirēnē panti tō ergazomenō to agathon te Ioudaiō prōton kai Hellēni — NA/TR · 10

For - God does not show… favoritism.

γάρ παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ ἐστιν οὐ προσωπολημψία gar para tō Theō estin ou prosōpolēmpsia — NA/TR · 11

  • All who sin apart from the law vvv will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under [the] law will be judged by [the] law.

γὰρ Ὅσοι ἥμαρτον ἀνόμως καὶ ἀπολοῦνται ἀνόμως καὶ ὅσοι ἥμαρτον ἐν νόμῳ κριθήσονται διὰ νόμου gar Hosoi hēmarton anomōs kai apolountai anomōs kai hosoi hēmarton en nomō krithēsontai dia nomou — NA/TR · 12

For [it is] not the hearers of [the] law [who are] righteous before God, but [it is] the doers of [the] law [who] will be declared righteous.

γὰρ οὐ οἱ ἀκροαταὶ νόμου δίκαιοι παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ ἀλλ’ οἱ ποιηταὶ νόμου δικαιωθήσονται gar ou hoi akroatai nomou dikaioi para tō Theō all’ hoi poiētai nomou dikaiōthēsontai — NA/TR · 13

Indeed, when Gentiles, who vvv do not have [the] law, do by nature what the law [requires], they are a law to themselves, [even though] they vvv do not have [the] law.

γὰρ Ὅταν ἔθνη τὰ μὴ ἔχοντα νόμον ποιῶσιν φύσει τὰ τοῦ νόμου εἰσιν νόμος ἑαυτοῖς οὗτοι μὴ ἔχοντες νόμον gar Hotan ethnē ta mē echonta nomon poiōsin physei ta tou nomou eisin nomos heautois houtoi mē echontes nomon — NA/TR · 14

[So] they show [that] the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, [and] their thoughts either accusing or defending [them]

οἵτινες ἐνδείκνυνται τὸ ἔργον τοῦ νόμου γραπτὸν ἐν αὐτῶν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν τῆς συνειδήσεως καὶ συμμαρτυρούσης ἀλλήλων τῶν λογισμῶν μεταξὺ κατηγορούντων ἢ καὶ ἀπολογουμένων hoitines endeiknyntai to ergon tou nomou grapton en autōn tais kardiais autōn tēs syneidēseōs kai symmartyrousēs allēlōn tōn logismōn metaxy katēgorountōn ē kai apologoumenōn — NA/TR · 15

on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Christ Jesus, as proclaimed by my gospel.

ἐν ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ ὅτε ὁ Θεὸς κρίνει τῶν ἀνθρώπων τὰ κρυπτὰ διὰ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ κατὰ μου τὸ εὐαγγέλιόν en hē hēmera hote ho Theos krinei tōn anthrōpōn ta krypta dia Christou Iēsou kata mou to euangelion — NA/TR · 16

The Jews and the Law

17

Now you, if you call [yourself] a Jew; [if you] rely on [the] law and boast in God;

δὲ σὺ Εἰ ἐπονομάζῃ Ἰουδαῖος καὶ ἐπαναπαύῃ νόμῳ καὶ καυχᾶσαι ἐν Θεῷ de sy Ei eponomazē Ioudaios kai epanapauē nomō kai kauchasai en Theō — NA/TR · 17

[if you] know [His] will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;

καὶ γινώσκεις τὸ θέλημα καὶ δοκιμάζεις τὰ διαφέροντα κατηχούμενος ἐκ τοῦ νόμου kai ginōskeis to thelēma kai dokimazeis ta diapheronta katēchoumenos ek tou nomou — NA/TR · 18

[if you] are convinced [that] you are a guide for [the] blind, a light for those in darkness,

τε πέποιθάς σεαυτὸν εἶναι ὁδηγὸν τυφλῶν φῶς τῶν ἐν σκότει te pepoithas seauton einai hodēgon typhlōn phōs tōn en skotei — NA/TR · 19

an instructor of [the] foolish, a teacher of infants, [because] you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—

παιδευτὴν ἀφρόνων διδάσκαλον νηπίων ἔχοντα ἐν τῷ νόμῳ τὴν μόρφωσιν τῆς γνώσεως καὶ τῆς ἀληθείας paideutēn aphronōn didaskalon nēpiōn echonta en tō nomō tēn morphōsin tēs gnōseōs kai tēs alētheias — NA/TR · 20

{you,} then, who teach others, vvv do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

οὖν ὁ διδάσκων ἕτερον οὐ διδάσκεις σεαυτὸν ὁ κηρύσσων μὴ κλέπτειν κλέπτεις oun ho didaskōn heteron ou didaskeis seauton ho kēryssōn mē kleptein klepteis — NA/TR · 21

You who forbid… adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

ὁ λέγων μὴ μοιχεύειν μοιχεύεις ὁ βδελυσσόμενος τὰ εἴδωλα ἱεροσυλεῖς ho legōn mē moicheuein moicheueis ho bdelyssomenos ta eidōla hierosyleis — NA/TR · 22

You who boast in [the] law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

ὃς καυχᾶσαι ἐν νόμῳ ἀτιμάζεις τὸν Θεὸν διὰ τῆς παραβάσεως τοῦ νόμου hos kauchasai en nomō atimazeis ton Theon dia tēs parabaseōs tou nomou — NA/TR · 23

  • As it is written: “- vvv God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

γὰρ καθὼς γέγραπται τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ Ὄνομα βλασφημεῖται ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν δι’ ὑμᾶς gar kathōs gegraptai to tou Theou Onoma blasphēmeitai en tois ethnesin di’ hymas — NA/TR · 24

  • Circumcision has value if you observe [the] law, but if you break [the] law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

μὲν γὰρ Περιτομὴ ὠφελεῖ ἐὰν πράσσῃς νόμον δὲ ἐὰν ᾖς παραβάτης νόμου σου ἡ περιτομή γέγονεν ἀκροβυστία men gar Peritomē ōphelei ean prassēs nomon de ean ēs parabatēs nomou sou hē peritomē gegonen akrobystia — NA/TR · 25

  • If a man who is not circumcised keeps the requirements of the law, {will} not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?

οὖν ἐὰν ἡ ἀκροβυστία φυλάσσῃ τὰ δικαιώματα τοῦ νόμου οὐχ αὐτοῦ ἡ ἀκροβυστία λογισθήσεται εἰς περιτομὴν oun ean hē akrobystia phylassē ta dikaiōmata tou nomou ouch autou hē akrobystia logisthēsetai eis peritomēn — NA/TR · 26

  • The [one who is] vvv physically uncircumcised [yet] keeps the law will condemn you who, [even though you have] [the] written code and circumcision, [are] a lawbreaker…

καὶ ἡ ἐκ φύσεως ἀκροβυστία τελοῦσα τὸν νόμον κρινεῖ σὲ τὸν διὰ γράμματος καὶ περιτομῆς παραβάτην νόμου kai hē ek physeōs akrobystia telousa ton nomon krinei se ton dia grammatos kai peritomēs parabatēn nomou — NA/TR · 27

  • A [man] is not a Jew [ because he is one ] outwardly, nor [is] circumcision vvv vvv [ only ] outward [and] physical.

γὰρ ὁ ἐστιν Οὐ Ἰουδαῖός ἐν τῷ φανερῷ οὐδὲ περιτομή ἡ ἐν τῷ φανερῷ ἐν σαρκὶ gar ho estin Ou Ioudaios en tō phanerō oude peritomē hē en tō phanerō en sarki — NA/TR · 28

29

No, a man [is] a Jew [ because he is one ] inwardly, and circumcision [is a matter] of the heart, by [the] Spirit, not by the written code. [Such a man’s] praise [does] not [come] from men, but from God.

ἀλλ’ ὁ Ἰουδαῖος ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ καὶ περιτομὴ καρδίας ἐν πνεύματι οὐ γράμματι οὗ ὁ ἔπαινος οὐκ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων ἀλλ’ ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ all’ ho Ioudaios en tō kryptō kai peritomē kardias en pneumati ou grammati hou ho epainos ouk ex anthrōpōn all’ ek tou Theou — NA/TR · 29
