Chapter 10
Warnings from Israel’s Past
1
- vvv I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and [that] they all passed through the sea.
2
- vvv They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
καὶ πάντες ἐβαπτίσαντο εἰς τὸν Μωϋσῆν ἐν τῇ νεφέλῃ καὶ ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ kai pantes ebaptisanto eis ton Mōusēn en tē nephelē kai en tē thalassē — NA/TR · 2
3
- They all ate the same spiritual food
καὶ πάντες ἔφαγον τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν βρῶμα kai pantes ephagon to auto pneumatikon brōma — NA/TR · 3
4
and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from [the] spiritual rock that accompanied them, and [that] rock was Christ.
καὶ πάντες ἔπιον τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν πόμα γὰρ ἔπινον ἐκ πνευματικῆς πέτρας ἀκολουθούσης δὲ ἡ πέτρα ἦν ὁ Χριστός kai pantes epion to auto pneumatikon poma gar epinon ek pneumatikēs petras akolouthousēs de hē petra ēn ho Christos — NA/TR · 4
5
Nevertheless, God vvv was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.
ἀλλ’ ὁ Θεός οὐκ εὐδόκησεν ἐν τοῖς πλείοσιν αὐτῶν γὰρ κατεστρώθησαν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ all’ ho Theos ouk eudokēsen en tois pleiosin autōn gar katestrōthēsan en tē erēmō — NA/TR · 5
6
- These things took place as examples to keep us vvv vvv vvv from craving evil things as they [did].
δὲ Ταῦτα ἐγενήθησαν τύποι ἡμῶν εἰς ἡμᾶς μὴ τὸ εἶναι ἐπιθυμητὰς κακῶν καθὼς κἀκεῖνοι ἐπεθύμησαν de Tauta egenēthēsan typoi hēmōn eis hēmas mē to einai epithymētas kakōn kathōs kakeinoi epethymēsan — NA/TR · 6
7
vvv Do not be idolaters, as some of them [were]. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
8
vvv We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them [did], and in one day twenty-three… thousand [of them] died.
9
- We should not test Christ, as some of them [did], and were killed by snakes.
10
vvv And do not complain, as some of them [did], and were killed by the destroying angel.
11
Now these things happened to them [as] examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.
12
So the [one who] thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall.
Ὥστε ὁ δοκῶν ἑστάναι βλεπέτω μὴ πέσῃ Hōste ho dokōn hestanai blepetō mē pesē — NA/TR · 12
13
No temptation has seized you except… what is common to man. And God [is] faithful; [He] vvv will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when [you are] tempted, He will also provide… an escape, so that you can stand up under [it].
Flee from Idolatry
14
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
Διόπερ μου ἀγαπητοί φεύγετε ἀπὸ τῆς εἰδωλολατρίας Dioper mou agapētoi pheugete apo tēs eidōlolatrias — NA/TR · 14
15
I speak… to reasonable [people]; judge for yourselves what I say.
λέγω ὡς φρονίμοις κρίνατε ὑμεῖς ὅ φημι legō hōs phronimois krinate hymeis ho phēmi — NA/TR · 15
16
Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a participation in the blood of Christ? [And] is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
ἐστὶν οὐχὶ Τὸ ποτήριον τῆς εὐλογίας ὃ εὐλογοῦμεν κοινωνία τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστιν οὐχὶ τὸν ἄρτον ὃν κλῶμεν κοινωνία τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ estin ouchi To potērion tēs eulogias ho eulogoumen koinōnia tou haimatos tou Christou estin ouchi ton arton hon klōmen koinōnia tou sōmatos tou Christou — NA/TR · 16
17
Because [there is] one loaf, [we who are] many are one body; for vvv we all partake of the one loaf.
18
Consider vvv the people of Israel: Are not those who eat the sacrifices fellow partakers in the altar?
19
Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
φημι οὖν Τί ὅτι εἰδωλόθυτόν ἐστιν τί ἢ ὅτι εἴδωλόν ἐστιν τί phēmi oun Ti hoti eidōlothyton estin ti ē hoti eidōlon estin ti — NA/TR · 19
20
No, [but] [the] sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And vvv I do not want you to be participants with demons.
ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἃ θύουσιν τὰ ἔθνη θύουσιν δαιμονίοις καὶ οὐ Θεῷ δὲ οὐ θέλω ὑμᾶς γίνεσθαι κοινωνοὺς τῶν δαιμονίων all’ hoti ha thyousin ta ethnē thyousin daimoniois kai ou Theō de ou thelō hymas ginesthai koinōnous tōn daimoniōn — NA/TR · 20
21
vvv You cannot drink [the] cup of [the] Lord and [the] cup of demons [too]; vvv you cannot partake in [the] table of [the] Lord and [the] table of demons {too}.
22
- Are we trying to provoke the Lord {to jealousy}? Are we… stronger than He?
ἢ παραζηλοῦμεν τὸν Κύριον ἐσμεν μὴ ἰσχυρότεροι αὐτοῦ ē parazēloumen ton Kyrion esmen mē ischyroteroi autou — NA/TR · 22
All to God’s Glory
23
“Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible, but not everything is edifying.
Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα συμφέρει Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα οἰκοδομεῖ Panta exestin all’ ou panta sympherei Panta exestin all’ ou panta oikodomei — NA/TR · 23
24
No one should seek his own [good], but [the good] of others.
μηδεὶς ζητείτω ἑαυτοῦ τὸ ἀλλὰ τὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου mēdeis zēteitō heautou to alla to tou heterou — NA/TR · 24
25
Eat anything sold in [the] meat market without raising questions of conscience,
ἐσθίετε Πᾶν τὸ πωλούμενον ἐν μακέλλῳ μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν esthiete Pan to pōloumenon en makellō mēden anakrinontes dia tēn syneidēsin — NA/TR · 25
26
for, “The earth [is] the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.”
γὰρ Ἡ γῆ Τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς gar Hē gē Tou Kyriou kai to plērōma autēs — NA/TR · 26
27
If an unbeliever invites you {to a meal} and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience.
Εἴ τις τῶν ἀπίστων καλεῖ ὑμᾶς καὶ θέλετε πορεύεσθαι ἐσθίετε πᾶν τὸ παρατιθέμενον ὑμῖν μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν Ei tis tōn apistōn kalei hymas kai thelete poreuesthai esthiete pan to paratithemenon hymin mēden anakrinontes dia tēn syneidēsin — NA/TR · 27
28
But if someone tells you, “This [food] was offered to idols, {then do} not eat [it], for the sake of the one who told [you] and for the sake of conscience—
29
- the other [one’s] [ conscience ], I mean, not your own -. For why… {should} my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience?
30
If I partake [in the meal] with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?
εἰ ἐγὼ μετέχω χάριτι τί βλασφημοῦμαι ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εὐχαριστῶ ei egō metechō chariti ti blasphēmoumai hyper hou egō eucharistō — NA/TR · 30
31
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.
32
Do not become a stumbling block…, whether to Jews [or] Greeks [or] the church of God—
33
as I also [try to] please everyone in all [I do]. vvv [For] I am not seeking my [own] good, but [the good] of many, that they may be saved.
καθὼς κἀγὼ ἀρέσκω πάντα πᾶσιν μὴ ζητῶν τὸ ἐμαυτοῦ σύμφορον ἀλλὰ τὸ τῶν πολλῶν ἵνα σωθῶσιν kathōs kagō areskō panta pasin mē zētōn to emautou symphoron alla to tōn pollōn hina sōthōsin — NA/TR · 33
