Chapter 12

Spiritual Gifts

1

Now about spiritual [gifts], brothers, vvv I do not want you to be uninformed.

δὲ Περὶ τῶν πνευματικῶν ἀδελφοί οὐ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν de Peri tōn pneumatikōn adelphoi ou thelō hymas agnoein — NA/TR · 1

You know that when you were pagans, vvv vvv you were influenced [and] led astray to - mute idols.

Οἴδατε ὅτι ὅτε ἦτε ἔθνη ὡς ἂν ἤγεσθε ἀπαγόμενοι πρὸς τὰ τὰ ἄφωνα εἴδωλα Oidate hoti hote ēte ethnē hōs an ēgesthe apagomenoi pros ta ta aphōna eidōla — NA/TR · 2

Therefore I inform you that no one who is speaking by [the] Spirit of God says, “Jesus [be] cursed, and no one can say, “Jesus [is] Lord, except… by [the] Holy Spirit.

διὸ γνωρίζω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδεὶς λαλῶν ἐν Πνεύματι Θεοῦ λέγει ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Αναθεμα καὶ οὐδεὶς δύναται εἰπεῖν ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Κυριος εἰ μὴ ἐν Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι dio gnōrizō hymin hoti oudeis lalōn en Pneumati Theou legei IĒSOUS Anathema kai oudeis dynatai eipein IĒSOUS Kyrios ei mē en Hagiō Pneumati — NA/TR · 3

  • There are different gifts, but the same Spirit.

δὲ εἰσίν Διαιρέσεις χαρισμάτων δὲ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα de eisin Diaireseis charismatōn de to auto Pneuma — NA/TR · 4

  • There are different ministries, but the same Lord.

καὶ εἰσιν διαιρέσεις διακονιῶν καὶ ὁ αὐτὸς Κύριος kai eisin diaireseis diakoniōn kai ho autos Kyrios — NA/TR · 5

  • There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all [people].

καὶ εἰσίν διαιρέσεις ἐνεργημάτων δὲ ὁ αὐτὸς Θεός ὁ ἐνεργῶν τὰ πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν kai eisin diaireseis energēmatōn de ho autos Theos ho energōn ta panta en pasin — NA/TR · 6

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

δὲ Ἑκάστῳ ἡ φανέρωσις τοῦ Πνεύματος δίδοται πρὸς τὸ συμφέρον de Hekastō hē phanerōsis tou Pneumatos didotai pros to sympheron — NA/TR · 7

  • To one there is given through the Spirit [the] message of wisdom, to another [the] message of knowledge by the same Spirit,

γὰρ μὲν ᾧ δίδοται διὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος λόγος σοφίας δὲ ἄλλῳ λόγος γνώσεως κατὰ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα gar men hō didotai dia tou Pneumatos logos sophias de allō logos gnōseōs kata to auto Pneuma — NA/TR · 8

to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,

ἑτέρῳ πίστις ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ Πνεύματι δὲ ἄλλῳ χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων ἐν τῷ ἑνὶ Πνεύματι heterō pistis en tō autō Pneumati de allō charismata iamatōn en tō heni Pneumati — NA/TR · 9

  • to another [the] working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another vvv speaking in various tongues, and to [still] another [the] interpretation of tongues.

δὲ ἄλλῳ ἐνεργήματα δυνάμεων δὲ ἄλλῳ προφητεία δὲ ἄλλῳ διακρίσεις πνευμάτων ἑτέρῳ γένη γλωσσῶν δὲ ἄλλῳ ἑρμηνεία γλωσσῶν de allō energēmata dynameōn de allō prophēteia de allō diakriseis pneumatōn heterō genē glōssōn de allō hermēneia glōssōn — NA/TR · 10

  • All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions [them] to each one as He determines.

δὲ πάντα ταῦτα ἐνεργεῖ ἓν καὶ τὸ αὐτὸ τὸ Πνεῦμα διαιροῦν ἑκάστῳ ἰδίᾳ καθὼς βούλεται de panta tauta energei hen kai to auto to Pneuma diairoun hekastō idia kathōs bouletai — NA/TR · 11

The Body of Christ

  • The body is a unit, though it is composed of many parts. And [although]… [its]… parts are many, they all form one body. So [it is] with Christ.

γὰρ Καθάπερ τὸ σῶμα ἐστιν ἕν καὶ ἔχει πολλὰ μέλη δὲ τὰ τοῦ σώματος μέλη ὄντα πολλὰ πάντα ἐστιν ἕν σῶμα οὕτως καὶ ὁ Χριστός gar Kathaper to sōma estin hen kai echei polla melē de ta tou sōmatos melē onta polla panta estin hen sōma houtōs kai ho Christos — NA/TR · 12

For in one Spirit we vvv were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and vvv we were all given one Spirit {to drink}.

γὰρ καὶ ἐν ἑνὶ Πνεύματι ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐβαπτίσθημεν εἰς ἓν σῶμα εἴτε Ἰουδαῖοι εἴτε Ἕλληνες εἴτε δοῦλοι εἴτε ἐλεύθεροι καὶ πάντες ἐποτίσθημεν ἓν Πνεῦμα gar kai en heni Pneumati hēmeis pantes ebaptisthēmen eis hen sōma eite Ioudaioi eite Hellēnes eite douloi eite eleutheroi kai pantes epotisthēmen hen Pneuma — NA/TR · 13

For the body does not consist… of one part, but of many.

γὰρ Καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἔστιν οὐκ ἓν μέλος ἀλλὰ πολλά gar Kai to sōma estin ouk hen melos alla polla — NA/TR · 14

If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that… would not [ make it any less ] a part of the body.

ἐὰν ὁ πούς εἴπῃ Ὅτι εἰμὶ οὐκ χείρ εἰμὶ οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ σώματος παρὰ τοῦτο ἔστιν οὐ οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ σώματος ean ho pous eipē Hoti eimi ouk cheir eimi ouk ek tou sōmatos para touto estin ou ouk ek tou sōmatos — NA/TR · 15

And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that… would not [ make it any less ] a part of the body.

καὶ ἐὰν τὸ οὖς εἴπῃ Ὅτι εἰμὶ οὐκ ὀφθαλμός εἰμὶ οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ σώματος παρὰ τοῦτο ἔστιν οὐ οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ σώματος kai ean to ous eipē Hoti eimi ouk ophthalmos eimi ouk ek tou sōmatos para touto estin ou ouk ek tou sōmatos — NA/TR · 16

If the whole body [were] an eye, where [would] the sense of hearing [be]? If [the] whole [body] [were] an ear, where [would] the sense of smell [be]?

εἰ τὸ ὅλον σῶμα ὀφθαλμός ποῦ ἡ ἀκοή εἰ ὅλον ἀκοή ποῦ ἡ ὄσφρησις ei to holon sōma ophthalmos pou hē akoē ei holon akoē pou hē osphrēsis — NA/TR · 17

But in fact, God has arranged the members of the body, every one of them, according to His design.

δὲ Νυνὶ ὁ Θεὸς ἔθετο τὰ μέλη ἐν τῷ σώματι ἕκαστον ἓν αὐτῶν καθὼς ἠθέλησεν de Nyni ho Theos etheto ta melē en tō sōmati hekaston hen autōn kathōs ēthelēsen — NA/TR · 18

  • If they were all one part, where [would] the body [be]?

δὲ εἰ ἦν τὰ πάντα ἓν μέλος ποῦ τὸ σῶμα de ei ēn ta panta hen melos pou to sōma — NA/TR · 19

  • As it is…, [there are] many parts, but one body.

δὲ νῦν μὲν πολλὰ μέλη δὲ ἓν σῶμα de nyn men polla melē de hen sōma — NA/TR · 20

  • The eye vvv cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you. [Nor can]… the head [say] to the feet, “I do not need you.

δὲ ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς Οὐ δύναται εἰπεῖν τῇ χειρί ἔχω οὐκ Χρείαν σου ἢ πάλιν ἡ κεφαλὴ τοῖς ποσίν ἔχω οὐκ Χρείαν ὑμῶν de ho ophthalmos Ou dynatai eipein tē cheiri echō ouk Chreian sou ē palin hē kephalē tois posin echō ouk Chreian hymōn — NA/TR · 21

On the contrary…, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,

ἀλλὰ πολλῷ μᾶλλον τὰ μέλη τοῦ σώματος δοκοῦντα ὑπάρχειν ἀσθενέστερα ἐστιν ἀναγκαῖά alla pollō mallon ta melē tou sōmatos dokounta hyparchein asthenestera estin anankaia — NA/TR · 22

and the [parts] we consider… less honorable, we treat with greater honor. And our unpresentable [parts] are treated with special modesty,

καὶ ἃ τοῦ σώματος δοκοῦμεν εἶναι ἀτιμότερα τούτοις περιτίθεμεν περισσοτέραν τιμὴν καὶ ἡμῶν τὰ ἀσχήμονα ἔχει περισσοτέραν εὐσχημοσύνην kai ha tou sōmatos dokoumen einai atimotera toutois peritithemen perissoteran timēn kai hēmōn ta aschēmona echei perissoteran euschēmosynēn — NA/TR · 23

whereas our presentable [parts] have no [such] need. But God has composed the body [and] has given greater honor to the [parts] that lacked it,

δὲ ἡμῶν τὰ εὐσχήμονα ἔχει οὐ χρείαν Ἀλλὰ ὁ θεὸς συνεκέρασεν τὸ σῶμα δοὺς περισσοτέραν τιμήν τῷ ὑστερουμένῳ de hēmōn ta euschēmona echei ou chreian Alla ho theos synekerasen to sōma dous perissoteran timēn tō hysteroumenō — NA/TR · 24

so that there should be no division in the body, but that [its] members {should have} mutual concern for one another.

ἵνα ᾖ μὴ σχίσμα ἐν τῷ σώματι ἀλλὰ τὰ μέλη τὸ αὐτὸ μεριμνῶσιν ὑπὲρ ἀλλήλων hina ē mē schisma en tō sōmati alla ta melē to auto merimnōsin hyper allēlōn — NA/TR · 25

  • If one part suffers, every part suffers with [it]; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with [it].

καὶ εἴτε ἓν μέλος πάσχει πάντα τὰ μέλη συμπάσχει εἴτε ἓν μέλος δοξάζεται πάντα τὰ μέλη συνχαίρει kai eite hen melos paschei panta ta melē sympaschei eite hen melos doxazetai panta ta melē synchairei — NA/TR · 26

The Greater Gifts

27

Now you are [the] body of Christ, and each of you [is]… a member [of it].

δέ Ὑμεῖς ἐστε σῶμα Χριστοῦ καὶ ἐκ μέρους μέλη de Hymeis este sōma Christou kai ek merous melē — NA/TR · 27

28

And - in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then [workers of] miracles, [and] [those with] gifts of healing, helping, administration, [and] various tongues.

Καὶ οὓς μὲν ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ ὁ Θεὸς ἔθετο πρῶτον ἀποστόλους δεύτερον προφήτας τρίτον διδασκάλους ἔπειτα δυνάμεις ἔπειτα χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων ἀντιλήμψεις κυβερνήσεις γένη γλωσσῶν Kai hous men en tē ekklēsia ho Theos etheto prōton apostolous deuteron prophētas triton didaskalous epeita dynameis epeita charismata iamatōn antilēmpseis kybernēseis genē glōssōn — NA/TR · 28

[Are] all apostles? [Are] all prophets? [Are] all teachers? [Do] all [work] miracles?

μὴ πάντες ἀπόστολοι μὴ πάντες προφῆται μὴ πάντες διδάσκαλοι μὴ πάντες δυνάμεις mē pantes apostoloi mē pantes prophētai mē pantes didaskaloi mē pantes dynameis — NA/TR · 29

30

[Do] all have gifts of healing? [Do] all speak in tongues? [Do] all interpret?

μὴ πάντες ἔχουσιν χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων μὴ πάντες λαλοῦσιν γλώσσαις μὴ πάντες διερμηνεύουσιν mē pantes echousin charismata iamatōn mē pantes lalousin glōssais mē pantes diermēneuousin — NA/TR · 30

But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you vvv the most excellent way.

δὲ ζηλοῦτε τὰ τὰ μείζονα χαρίσματα Καὶ ἔτι δείκνυμι ὑμῖν καθ’ ὑπερβολὴν ὁδὸν de zēloute ta ta meizona charismata Kai eti deiknymi hymin kath’ hyperbolēn hodon — NA/TR · 31
