Chapter 2
Paul’s Message by the Spirit’s Power

[When] I came to you, brothers, vvv I did not come with eloquence… or wisdom [as] I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.
Κἀγὼ ἐλθὼν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἀδελφοί οὐ ἦλθον καθ’ ὑπεροχὴν λόγου ἢ σοφίας καταγγέλλων ὑμῖν τὸ μαρτύριον τοῦ Θεοῦ Kagō elthōn pros hymas adelphoi ou ēlthon kath’ hyperochēn logou ē sophias katangellōn hymin to martyrion tou Theou — NA/TR · 1

For I resolved to know nothing… [while I was] with you except… Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
γὰρ ἔκρινά εἰδέναι οὐ τι ἐν ὑμῖν εἰ μὴ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν καὶ τοῦτον ἐσταυρωμένον gar ekrina eidenai ou ti en hymin ei mē Iēsoun Christon kai touton estaurōmenon — NA/TR · 2

I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling.
κἀγὼ ἐγενόμην πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν ἀσθενείᾳ καὶ ἐν φόβῳ καὶ ἐν πολλῷ τρόμῳ kagō egenomēn pros hymas en astheneia kai en phobō kai en pollō tromō — NA/TR · 3

- My message and my preaching [were] not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of [the] Spirit’s power,
καὶ μου ὁ λόγος καὶ μου τὸ κήρυγμά οὐκ ἐν πειθοῖς λόγοις σοφίας ἀλλ’ ἐν ἀποδείξει Πνεύματος καὶ δυνάμεως kai mou ho logos kai mou to kērygma ouk en peithois logois sophias all’ en apodeixei Pneumatos kai dynameōs — NA/TR · 4

so that your faith vvv would not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.
ἵνα ὑμῶν ἡ πίστις μὴ ᾖ ἐν ἀνθρώπων σοφίᾳ ἀλλ’ ἐν Θεοῦ δυνάμει hina hymōn hē pistis mē ē en anthrōpōn sophia all’ en Theou dynamei — NA/TR · 5
Spiritual Wisdom

Among the mature, however, we speak a message of wisdom— but not [the] wisdom of this age [or] of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
ἐν τοῖς τελείοις δὲ λαλοῦμεν Σοφίαν δὲ οὐ σοφίαν τούτου τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐδὲ τῶν ἀρχόντων τούτου τοῦ αἰῶνος τῶν καταργουμένων en tois teleiois de laloumen Sophian de ou sophian toutou tou aiōnos oude tōn archontōn toutou tou aiōnos tōn katargoumenōn — NA/TR · 6

No, we speak of vvv [the] mysterious [and] hidden wisdom of God, which [He] destined for our glory before time [began].
ἀλλὰ λαλοῦμεν ἐν μυστηρίῳ τὴν ἀποκεκρυμμένην σοφίαν Θεοῦ ἣν ὁ Θεὸς προώρισεν εἰς ἡμῶν δόξαν πρὸ τῶν αἰώνων alla laloumen en mystēriō tēn apokekrymmenēn sophian Theou hēn ho Theos proōrisen eis hēmōn doxan pro tōn aiōnōn — NA/TR · 7

None of the rulers of this age understood [it]. For if they had, vvv vvv they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
οὐδεὶς τῶν ἀρχόντων τούτου τοῦ αἰῶνος ἔγνωκεν ἣν γὰρ εἰ ἔγνωσαν ἂν οὐκ ἐσταύρωσαν τὸν Κύριον τῆς δόξης oudeis tōn archontōn toutou tou aiōnos egnōken hēn gar ei egnōsan an ouk estaurōsan ton Kyrion tēs doxēs — NA/TR · 8

Rather, as it is written: “- No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined…, what God has prepared for those who love Him.”
ἀλλὰ καθὼς γέγραπται Ἃ οὐκ ὀφθαλμὸς εἶδεν καὶ οὐκ οὖς ἤκουσεν καὶ οὐκ καρδίαν ἀνέβη ἐπὶ ἀνθρώπου ὅσα ὁ Θεὸς ἡτοίμασεν τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν alla kathōs gegraptai Ha ouk ophthalmos eiden kai ouk ous ēkousen kai ouk kardian anebē epi anthrōpou hosa ho Theos hētoimasen tois agapōsin auton — NA/TR · 9

But God has revealed [it] to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep [ things ] of God.
γὰρ ὁ Θεὸς ἀπεκάλυψεν Ἡμῖν διὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος γὰρ Τὸ Πνεῦμα ἐραυνᾷ πάντα καὶ τὰ βάθη τοῦ Θεοῦ gar ho Theos apekalypsen Hēmin dia tou Pneumatos gar To Pneuma erauna panta kai ta bathē tou Theou — NA/TR · 10

For who among men knows the [thoughts] of man except… vvv vvv [his own] spirit within him? So too, no one knows the [thoughts] of God except… the Spirit of God.
γὰρ τίς ἀνθρώπων οἶδεν τὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰ μὴ τὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου πνεῦμα τὸ ἐν αὐτῷ οὕτως καὶ οὐδεὶς ἔγνωκεν τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰ μὴ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Θεοῦ gar tis anthrōpōn oiden ta tou anthrōpou ei mē to tou anthrōpou pneuma to en autō houtōs kai oudeis egnōken ta tou Theou ei mē to Pneuma tou Theou — NA/TR · 11

- We have not received… the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who [is] from God, that we may understand what - God has freely given us.
δὲ ἡμεῖς ἐλάβομεν οὐ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ κόσμου ἀλλὰ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα εἰδῶμεν τὰ ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ χαρισθέντα ἡμῖν de hēmeis elabomen ou to pneuma tou kosmou alla to pneuma to ek tou Theou hina eidōmen ta hypo tou Theou charisthenta hēmin — NA/TR · 12

And [this is] [what] we speak, not in words taught [us] by human wisdom, but in [words] taught by [the] Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual [words].
καὶ ἃ λαλοῦμεν οὐκ ἐν λόγοις διδακτοῖς ἀνθρωπίνης σοφίας ἀλλ’ ἐν διδακτοῖς Πνεύματος συνκρίνοντες πνευματικὰ πνευματικοῖς kai ha laloumen ouk en logois didaktois anthrōpinēs sophias all’ en didaktois Pneumatos synkrinontes pneumatika pneumatikois — NA/TR · 13

- [The] natural man {does} not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and vvv he cannot understand [them], because {they are} spiritually discerned.
δὲ Ψυχικὸς ἄνθρωπος οὐ δέχεται τὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος τοῦ Θεοῦ γὰρ ἐστίν μωρία αὐτῷ καὶ οὐ δύναται γνῶναι ὅτι πνευματικῶς ἀνακρίνεται de Psychikos anthrōpos ou dechetai ta tou Pneumatos tou Theou gar estin mōria autō kai ou dynatai gnōnai hoti pneumatikōs anakrinetai — NA/TR · 14

- The spiritual [man] judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone’s judgment…
δὲ ὁ πνευματικὸς ἀνακρίνει τὰ πάντα δὲ αὐτὸς ἀνακρίνεται ὑπ’ οὐδενὸς de ho pneumatikos anakrinei ta panta de autos anakrinetai hyp’ oudenos — NA/TR · 15

“For who has known [the] mind of [the] Lord, [so as] to instruct Him?” But we have [the] mind of Christ.
