Chapter 5

Our Eternal Dwelling

For we know that if the earthly tent we [live in] is dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

γὰρ Οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἐὰν τοῦ ἐπίγειος σκήνους ἡ ἡμῶν οἰκία καταλυθῇ ἔχομεν οἰκοδομὴν ἐκ Θεοῦ αἰώνιον οἰκίαν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ἀχειροποίητον gar Oidamen hoti ean tou epigeios skēnous hē hēmōn oikia katalythē echomen oikodomēn ek Theou aiōnion oikian en tois ouranois acheiropoiēton — NA/TR · 1

  • For in this [tent] we groan, longing to be clothed with our vvv vvv heavenly dwelling,

καὶ γὰρ ἐν τούτῳ στενάζομεν ἐπιποθοῦντες ἐπενδύσασθαι ἡμῶν τὸ ἐξ οὐρανοῦ τὸ οἰκητήριον kai gar en toutō stenazomen epipothountes ependysasthai hēmōn to ex ouranou to oikētērion — NA/TR · 2

because… when we are clothed, vvv we will not be found naked.

εἴ γε καὶ ἐνδυσάμενοι οὐ εὑρεθησόμεθα γυμνοὶ ei ge kai endysamenoi ou heurethēsometha gymnoi — NA/TR · 3

For… [while] we are in [this] tent, we groan under our burdens, because… vvv we do not wish to be unclothed but clothed, so that [our] mortality may be swallowed up by life.

καὶ γὰρ οἱ ὄντες ἐν τῷ σκήνει στενάζομεν βαρούμενοι ἐφ’ ᾧ οὐ θέλομεν ἐκδύσασθαι ἀλλ’ ἐπενδύσασθαι ἵνα τὸ θνητὸν καταποθῇ ὑπὸ τῆς ζωῆς kai gar hoi ontes en tō skēnei stenazomen baroumenoi eph’ hō ou thelomen ekdysasthai all’ ependysasthai hina to thnēton katapothē hypo tēs zōēs — NA/TR · 4

And [it is] God who has prepared us for this very [purpose] [and] has given us the Spirit as a pledge of what is to come.

δὲ Θεός ὁ κατεργασάμενος ἡμᾶς εἰς τοῦτο αὐτὸ ὁ δοὺς ἡμῖν τὸν τοῦ Πνεύματος ἀρραβῶνα de Theos ho katergasamenos hēmas eis touto auto ho dous hēmin ton tou Pneumatos arrabōna — NA/TR · 5

Therefore vvv we are always confident, although we know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord.

οὖν πάντοτε Θαρροῦντες καὶ εἰδότες ὅτι ἐνδημοῦντες ἐν τῷ σώματι ἐκδημοῦμεν ἀπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου oun pantote Tharrountes kai eidotes hoti endēmountes en tō sōmati ekdēmoumen apo tou Kyriou — NA/TR · 6

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

γὰρ περιπατοῦμεν διὰ πίστεως οὐ διὰ εἴδους gar peripatoumen dia pisteōs ou dia eidous — NA/TR · 7

We are confident, then, and would prefer… to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Θαρροῦμεν δὲ καὶ εὐδοκοῦμεν μᾶλλον ἐκδημῆσαι ἐκ τοῦ σώματος καὶ ἐνδημῆσαι πρὸς τὸν Κύριον Tharroumen de kai eudokoumen mallon ekdēmēsai ek tou sōmatos kai endēmēsai pros ton Kyrion — NA/TR · 8

So we aspire to please Him, whether we are at home [in this body] or away from it.

διὸ καὶ φιλοτιμούμεθα εἶναι εὐάρεστοι αὐτῷ εἴτε ἐνδημοῦντες εἴτε ἐκδημοῦντες dio kai philotimoumetha einai euarestoi autō eite endēmountes eite ekdēmountes — NA/TR · 9

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad.

γὰρ τοὺς ἡμᾶς δεῖ πάντας φανερωθῆναι ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ βήματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἵνα ἕκαστος κομίσηται τὰ πρὸς ἃ ἔπραξεν διὰ τοῦ σώματος εἴτε ἀγαθὸν εἴτε φαῦλον gar tous hēmas dei pantas phanerōthēnai emprosthen tou bēmatos tou Christou hina hekastos komisētai ta pros ha epraxen dia tou sōmatos eite agathon eite phaulon — NA/TR · 10

Ambassadors for Christ

Therefore, since we know [what it means] to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is clear to God, and I hope it is clear to your conscience as well.

οὖν Εἰδότες τὸν φόβον τοῦ Κυρίου πείθομεν ἀνθρώπους δὲ πεφανερώμεθα Θεῷ δὲ ἐλπίζω πεφανερῶσθαι ἐν ὑμῶν ταῖς συνειδήσεσιν καὶ oun Eidotes ton phobon tou Kyriou peithomen anthrōpous de pephanerōmetha Theō de elpizō pephanerōsthai en hymōn tais syneidēsesin kai — NA/TR · 11

vvv We are not commending ourselves to you again. Instead, we are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you can answer… those who take pride in appearances [rather than]… in [the] heart.

οὐ συνιστάνομεν ἑαυτοὺς ὑμῖν πάλιν ἀλλὰ διδόντες ὑμῖν ἀφορμὴν καυχήματος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἵνα ἔχητε πρὸς τοὺς καυχωμένους ἐν προσώπῳ καὶ μὴ ἐν καρδίᾳ ou synistanomen heautous hymin palin alla didontes hymin aphormēn kauchēmatos hyper hēmōn hina echēte pros tous kauchōmenous en prosōpō kai mē en kardia — NA/TR · 12

If we are out of our mind, [it is] for God; if we are of sound mind, [it is] for you.

Εἴτε γὰρ ἐξέστημεν Θεῷ εἴτε σωφρονοῦμεν ὑμῖν Eite gar exestēmen Theō eite sōphronoumen hymin — NA/TR · 13

For Christ’s love compels us, [because] we are convinced… that One died for all, therefore all died.

γὰρ τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἡ ἀγάπη συνέχει ἡμᾶς κρίναντας τοῦτο ὅτι εἷς ἀπέθανεν ὑπὲρ πάντων ἄρα οἱ πάντες ἀπέθανον gar tou Christou hē agapē synechei hēmas krinantas touto hoti heis apethanen hyper pantōn ara hoi pantes apethanon — NA/TR · 14

And He died for all, that those who live {should} no longer live for themselves, but for Him [who] died for them and was raised again.

καὶ ἀπέθανεν ὑπὲρ πάντων ἵνα οἱ ζῶντες μηκέτι ζῶσιν ἑαυτοῖς ἀλλὰ τῷ ἀποθανόντι ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐγερθέντι kai apethanen hyper pantōn hina hoi zōntes mēketi zōsin heautois alla tō apothanonti hyper autōn kai egerthenti — NA/TR · 15

So from now on we regard no one according to [the] flesh. vvv Although we once regarded Christ [in this way]…, - [we do so] no longer.

Ὥστε ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν οὐδένα κατὰ σάρκα καὶ εἰ ἐγνώκαμεν Χριστόν κατὰ σάρκα ἀλλὰ νῦν γινώσκομεν οὐκέτι Hōste apo tou nyn hēmeis oidamen oudena kata sarka kai ei egnōkamen Christon kata sarka alla nyn ginōskomen ouketi — NA/TR · 16

Therefore if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, [the] new has come!

ὥστε εἴ τις ἐν Χριστῷ καινὴ κτίσις τὰ ἀρχαῖα παρῆλθεν ἰδοὺ καινά γέγονεν hōste ei tis en Christō kainē ktisis ta archaia parēlthen idou kaina gegonen — NA/TR · 17

  • All this [is] from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

δὲ πάντα Τὰ ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ καταλλάξαντος ἡμᾶς ἑαυτῷ διὰ Χριστοῦ καὶ δόντος ἡμῖν τὴν διακονίαν τῆς καταλλαγῆς de panta Ta ek tou Theou tou katallaxantos hēmas heautō dia Christou kai dontos hēmin tēn diakonian tēs katallagēs — NA/TR · 18

  • that God was reconciling [the] world to Himself in Christ, not counting [men’s] trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

ὡς ὅτι Θεὸς ἦν καταλλάσσων κόσμον ἑαυτῷ ἐν Χριστῷ μὴ λογιζόμενος αὐτῶν τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτοῖς καὶ θέμενος ἐν ἡμῖν τὸν λόγον τῆς καταλλαγῆς hōs hoti Theos ēn katallassōn kosmon heautō en Christō mē logizomenos autōn ta paraptōmata autois kai themenos en hēmin ton logon tēs katallagēs — NA/TR · 19

Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: Be reconciled to God.

οὖν πρεσβεύομεν Ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ ὡς τοῦ Θεοῦ παρακαλοῦντος δι’ ἡμῶν δεόμεθα ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ καταλλάγητε τῷ Θεῷ oun presbeuomen Hyper Christou hōs tou Theou parakalountos di’ hēmōn deometha hyper Christou katallagēte tō Theō — NA/TR · 20

[God] made Him who knew no sin [to be] sin vvv on our behalf, so that in Him we might become [the] righteousness of God.

ἐποίησεν τὸν γνόντα μὴ ἁμαρτίαν ἁμαρτίαν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἵνα ἐν αὐτῷ ἡμεῖς γενώμεθα δικαιοσύνη Θεοῦ epoiēsen ton gnonta mē hamartian hamartian hyper hēmōn hina en autō hēmeis genōmetha dikaiosynē Theou — NA/TR · 21
