Chapter 2
The Council at Jerusalem

Fourteen years vvv later I went up again to Jerusalem, accompanied by Barnabas. I took Titus {along} also.

- I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But vvv [I spoke] privately to those recognized as leaders, [for fear that] vvv I was running or had already run in vain.
δὲ ἀνέβην κατὰ ἀποκάλυψιν καὶ ἀνεθέμην αὐτοῖς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ὃ κηρύσσω ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν δὲ κατ’ ἰδίαν τοῖς δοκοῦσιν πως μή τρέχω ἢ ἔδραμον εἰς κενὸν de anebēn kata apokalypsin kai anethemēn autois to euangelion ho kēryssō en tois ethnesin de kat’ idian tois dokousin pōs mē trechō ē edramon eis kenon — NA/TR · 2

Yet not even Titus, who [was] with me, was compelled to be circumcised, [even though] he was a Greek.

[This issue arose] because [some] false brothers had come in under false pretenses to spy on our freedom - in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us.
δὲ διὰ τοὺς ψευδαδέλφους οἵτινες παρεισῆλθον παρεισάκτους κατασκοπῆσαι ἡμῶν τὴν ἐλευθερίαν ἣν ἔχομεν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἵνα καταδουλώσουσιν ἡμᾶς de dia tous pseudadelphous hoitines pareisēlthon pareisaktous kataskopēsai hēmōn tēn eleutherian hēn echomen en Christō Iēsou hina katadoulōsousin hēmas — NA/TR · 4

We did {not} give in… to [them] for vvv a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.

But as for the highly esteemed…— whatever they were… vvv makes no difference to me; God vvv does not show favoritism… those leaders added nothing to me.
δὲ Ἀπὸ τῶν δοκούντων εἶναί τι ὁποῖοί ἦσαν ποτε οὐδέν διαφέρει μοι Θεὸς οὐ λαμβάνει πρόσωπον ὁ ἀνθρώπου γὰρ οἱ δοκοῦντες προσανέθεντο οὐδὲν ἐμοὶ de Apo tōn dokountōn einai ti hopoioi ēsan pote ouden diapherei moi Theos ou lambanei prosōpon ho anthrōpou gar hoi dokountes prosanethento ouden emoi — NA/TR · 6

vvv On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted [to preach] the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter [ had been ] to the circumcised.
ἀλλὰ τοὐναντίον ἰδόντες ὅτι πεπίστευμαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς ἀκροβυστίας καθὼς Πέτρος τῆς περιτομῆς alla tounantion idontes hoti pepisteumai to euangelion tēs akrobystias kathōs Petros tēs peritomēs — NA/TR · 7

For the [One who] was at work in Peter’s… apostleship to the circumcised was also at work… in my [apostleship] to the Gentiles.
γὰρ ὁ ἐνεργήσας Πέτρῳ εἰς ἀποστολὴν τῆς περιτομῆς ἐνήργησεν καὶ ἐμοὶ εἰς τὰ ἔθνη gar ho energēsas Petrō eis apostolēn tēs peritomēs enērgēsen kai emoi eis ta ethnē — NA/TR · 8

And recognizing the grace [that] I had been given, James -, Cephas, and John— those reputed to be pillars— gave me and Barnabas [the] right hand of fellowship, so that we [ should go ] to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.
καὶ γνόντες τὴν χάριν τὴν μοι δοθεῖσάν Ἰάκωβος καὶ Κηφᾶς καὶ Ἰωάννης οἱ δοκοῦντες εἶναι στῦλοι ἔδωκαν ἐμοὶ καὶ Βαρνάβα δεξιὰς κοινωνίας ἵνα ἡμεῖς εἰς τὰ ἔθνη δὲ αὐτοὶ εἰς τὴν περιτομήν kai gnontes tēn charin tēn moi dotheisan Iakōbos kai Kēphas kai Iōannēs hoi dokountes einai styloi edōkan emoi kai Barnaba dexias koinōnias hina hēmeis eis ta ethnē de autoi eis tēn peritomēn — NA/TR · 9

[They] only [asked us] to remember the poor, the very thing - I was eager to do.

Paul Confronts Cephas

When Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed [him] to his face, because he stood condemned.

For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself, for fear of those in [the] circumcision [ group ].
γὰρ πρὸ τινας τοῦ ἐλθεῖν ἀπὸ Ἰακώβου συνήσθιεν μετὰ τῶν ἐθνῶν δὲ ὅτε ἦλθον ὑπέστελλεν καὶ ἀφώριζεν ἑαυτόν φοβούμενος τοὺς ἐκ περιτομῆς gar pro tinas tou elthein apo Iakōbou synēsthien meta tōn ethnōn de hote ēlthon hypestellen kai aphōrizen heauton phoboumenos tous ek peritomēs — NA/TR · 12

- The other Jews vvv joined him in his hypocrisy…, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.
καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ συνυπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ ὥστε τῇ αὐτῶν ὑποκρίσει καὶ Βαρνάβας συναπήχθη kai hoi loipoi Ioudaioi kai synypekrithēsan autō hōste tē autōn hypokrisei kai Barnabas synapēchthē — NA/TR · 13

- When I saw that vvv they were not walking in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of [them] all, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
Ἀλλ’ ὅτε εἶδον ὅτι οὐκ ὀρθοποδοῦσιν πρὸς τὴν ἀλήθειαν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου εἶπον τῷ Κηφᾷ ἔμπροσθεν πάντων Εἰ σὺ ὑπάρχων Ἰουδαῖος ζῇς ἐθνικῶς καὶ οὐκ Ἰουδαϊκῶς πῶς ἀναγκάζεις τὰ ἔθνη ἰουδαΐζειν All’ hote eidon hoti ouk orthopodousin pros tēn alētheian tou euangeliou eipon tō Kēpha emprosthen pantōn Ei sy hyparchōn Ioudaios zēs ethnikōs kai ouk Ioudaikōs pōs anankazeis ta ethnē ioudaizein — NA/TR · 14

We [who are] Jews by birth and not vvv Gentile “sinners”

- know that a man vvv is not justified by works of [the] law, but… by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too…, have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one… will be justified.
δὲ εἰδότες ὅτι ἄνθρωπος οὐ δικαιοῦται ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἐὰν μὴ διὰ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐπιστεύσαμεν εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν ἵνα δικαιωθῶμεν ἐκ πίστεως Χριστοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ὅτι ἐξ ἔργων νόμου οὐ πᾶσα σάρξ δικαιωθήσεται de eidotes hoti anthrōpos ou dikaioutai ex ergōn nomou ean mē dia pisteōs Iēsou Christou kai hēmeis episteusamen eis Christon Iēsoun hina dikaiōthōmen ek pisteōs Christou kai ouk ex ergōn nomou hoti ex ergōn nomou ou pasa sarx dikaiōthēsetai — NA/TR · 16

But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ, we ourselves… are found to be sinners, does that make Christ a minister of sin? vvv Certainly not!

- If I rebuild… what I have already torn down, I prove myself [to be] a lawbreaker.

For through [the] law I died to [the] law so that I might live to God.

I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The [life] vvv I live in [the] body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up… for me.

vvv I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness [comes] through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
