Chapter 5
Freedom in Christ
1
[It is] for freedom [that] Christ has set us free… Stand firm, then, and {do} not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.
Τῇ ἐλευθερίᾳ Χριστὸς ἠλευθέρωσεν ἡμᾶς στήκετε οὖν καὶ μὴ ἐνέχεσθε πάλιν ζυγῷ δουλείας Tē eleutheria Christos ēleutherōsen hēmas stēkete oun kai mē enechesthe palin zygō douleias — NA/TR · 1

Take notice: I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value… to you {at all}.

vvv Again I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
δὲ πάλιν μαρτύρομαι παντὶ ἀνθρώπῳ περιτεμνομένῳ ὅτι ἐστὶν ὀφειλέτης ποιῆσαι τὸν ὅλον νόμον de palin martyromai panti anthrōpō peritemnomenō hoti estin opheiletēs poiēsai ton holon nomon — NA/TR · 3

{You} who are [trying] to be justified by [the] law have been severed from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

[But] by faith we eagerly await through [the] Spirit [the] hope of righteousness.

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value… What matters is faith expressing itself through love.
γὰρ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ οὔτε περιτομή οὔτε ἀκροβυστία ἰσχύει τι ἀλλὰ πίστις ἐνεργουμένη δι’ ἀγάπης gar en Christō Iēsou oute peritomē oute akrobystia ischyei ti alla pistis energoumenē di’ agapēs — NA/TR · 6

You were running so well. Who has obstructed you vvv from obeying the truth?
Ἐτρέχετε καλῶς τίς ἐνέκοψεν ὑμᾶς μὴ πείθεσθαι τῇ ἀληθείᾳ Etrechete kalōs tis enekopsen hymas mē peithesthai tē alētheia — NA/TR · 7

[Such] persuasion [does] not [come] from the [One] who calls you.
ἡ πεισμονὴ οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος ὑμᾶς hē peismonē ouk ek tou kalountos hymas — NA/TR · 8

A little leaven works through the whole batch [of dough].
μικρὰ ζύμη ζυμοῖ τὸ ὅλον φύραμα mikra zymē zymoi to holon phyrama — NA/TR · 9

I am confident in [the] Lord that you will take no other view… The [one who is] troubling you will bear the judgment, whoever… he may be.
ἐγὼ πέποιθα ἐν Κυρίῳ ὅτι εἰς ὑμᾶς φρονήσετε οὐδὲν ἄλλο δὲ ὁ ταράσσων ὑμᾶς βαστάσει τὸ κρίμα ὅστις ἐὰν ᾖ egō pepoitha en Kyriō hoti eis hymas phronēsete ouden allo de ho tarassōn hymas bastasei to krima hostis ean ē — NA/TR · 10

Now, brothers, if I {am} still preaching circumcision, why vvv am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.
δέ ἀδελφοί εἰ Ἐγὼ ἔτι κηρύσσω περιτομὴν τί ἔτι διώκομαι ἄρα τὸ σκάνδαλον τοῦ σταυροῦ κατήργηται de adelphoi ei Egō eti kēryssō peritomēn ti eti diōkomai ara to skandalon tou staurou katērgētai — NA/TR · 11

As for those who are agitating you, I wish vvv they would proceed to emasculate themselves!

For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but [do] not [use] [your] freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love.
γὰρ Ὑμεῖς ἀδελφοί ἐκλήθητε ἐπ’ ἐλευθερίᾳ μόνον μὴ τὴν ἐλευθερίαν εἰς ἀφορμὴν τῇ σαρκί ἀλλὰ δουλεύετε ἀλλήλοις διὰ τῆς ἀγάπης gar Hymeis adelphoi eklēthēte ep’ eleutheria monon mē tēn eleutherian eis aphormēn tē sarki alla douleuete allēlois dia tēs agapēs — NA/TR · 13

- The entire law is fulfilled in… a single decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
γὰρ ὁ πᾶς νόμος πεπλήρωται ἐν ἐν τῷ ἑνὶ λόγῳ Ἀγαπήσεις σου τὸν πλησίον ὡς σεαυτόν gar ho pas nomos peplērōtai en en tō heni logō Agapēseis sou ton plēsion hōs seauton — NA/TR · 14

But if you keep on biting and devouring one another, watch out, [or] you will be consumed by one another.
δὲ εἰ δάκνετε καὶ κατεσθίετε ἀλλήλους βλέπετε μὴ ἀναλωθῆτε ὑπ’ ἀλλήλων de ei daknete kai katesthiete allēlous blepete mē analōthēte hyp’ allēlōn — NA/TR · 15
Walking by the Spirit

So I say, walk by [the] Spirit, and vvv vvv you will not gratify [the] desires [of the] flesh.
δέ Λέγω περιπατεῖτε Πνεύματι καὶ οὐ μὴ τελέσητε ἐπιθυμίαν σαρκὸς de Legō peripateite Pneumati kai ou mē telesēte epithymian sarkos — NA/TR · 16

For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. [They] are opposed to each other, so that vvv you do not do what… vvv you want.
γὰρ ἡ σὰρξ ἐπιθυμεῖ κατὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος δὲ τὸ Πνεῦμα κατὰ τῆς σαρκός γὰρ ταῦτα ἀντίκειται ἀλλήλοις ἵνα μὴ ποιῆτε ταῦτα ἃ ἐὰν θέλητε gar hē sarx epithymei kata tou Pneumatos de to Pneuma kata tēs sarkos gar tauta antikeitai allēlois hina mē poiēte tauta ha ean thelēte — NA/TR · 17

But if you are led by [the] Spirit, you are not under [the] law.
δὲ εἰ ἄγεσθε Πνεύματι ἐστὲ οὐκ ὑπὸ νόμον de ei agesthe Pneumati este ouk hypo nomon — NA/TR · 18

- The acts of the flesh are obvious: - sexual immorality, impurity, [and] debauchery;
δέ τὰ ἔργα τῆς σαρκός ἐστιν Φανερὰ ἅτινά ἐστιν πορνεία ἀκαθαρσία ἀσέλγεια de ta erga tēs sarkos estin Phanera hatina estin porneia akatharsia aselgeia — NA/TR · 19

idolatry [and] sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, [and] rage; rivalries, divisions, factions,
εἰδωλολατρία φαρμακεία ἔχθραι ἔρις ζῆλος θυμοί ἐριθεῖαι διχοστασίαι αἱρέσεις eidōlolatria pharmakeia echthrai eris zēlos thymoi eritheiai dichostasiai haireseis — NA/TR · 20

[and] envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like… I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things vvv will not inherit [the] kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
δὲ Ὁ καρπὸς τοῦ Πνεύματός ἐστιν ἀγάπη χαρά εἰρήνη μακροθυμία χρηστότης ἀγαθωσύνη πίστις de Ho karpos tou Pneumatos estin agapē chara eirēnē makrothymia chrēstotēs agathōsynē pistis — NA/TR · 22

gentleness, [and] self-control. Against such things there is no law.
πραΰτης ἐγκράτεια κατὰ τοιούτων τῶν ἔστιν οὐκ νόμος prautēs enkrateia kata toioutōn tōn estin ouk nomos — NA/TR · 23

- Those who [belong to] Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with [its] passions and desires.
δὲ Οἱ τοῦ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐσταύρωσαν τὴν σάρκα σὺν τοῖς παθήμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις de Hoi tou Christou Iēsou estaurōsan tēn sarka syn tois pathēmasin kai tais epithymiais — NA/TR · 24
25
Since we live by [the] Spirit, vvv let us walk in step with [the] Spirit.

vvv Let us not become conceited, provoking [and] envying one another.
