Chapter 2
Alive with Christ
1
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
Καὶ ὑμᾶς ὄντας νεκροὺς τοῖς ὑμῶν παραπτώμασιν καὶ ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις Kai hymas ontas nekrous tois hymōn paraptōmasin kai tais hamartiais — NA/TR · 1

in which vvv you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world [and] of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit [who is] now at work in the sons of disobedience.
ἐν αἷς ποτε περιεπατήσατε κατὰ τὸν αἰῶνα τούτου τοῦ κόσμου κατὰ τὸν ἄρχοντα τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ ἀέρος τοῦ πνεύματος νῦν τοῦ ἐνεργοῦντος ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς τῆς ἀπειθείας en hais pote periepatēsate kata ton aiōna toutou tou kosmou kata ton archonta tēs exousias tou aeros tou pneumatos nyn tou energountos en tois huiois tēs apeitheias — NA/TR · 2

All of us also lived among [them] at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh [and] indulging [its] desires and thoughts -. - Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.
πάντες ἡμεῖς καὶ ἀνεστράφημέν ἐν οἷς ποτε ἐν ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις ἡμῶν τῆς σαρκὸς ποιοῦντες τὰ θελήματα καὶ τῶν διανοιῶν τῆς σαρκὸς καὶ καὶ ὡς οἱ λοιποί ἤμεθα φύσει τέκνα ὀργῆς pantes hēmeis kai anestraphēmen en hois pote en tais epithymiais hēmōn tēs sarkos poiountes ta thelēmata kai tōn dianoiōn tēs sarkos kai kai hōs hoi loipoi ēmetha physei tekna orgēs — NA/TR · 3

But because of His great love for us…, God, who is rich in mercy,
δὲ διὰ αὐτοῦ πολλὴν τὴν ἀγάπην ἣν ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς Ὁ Θεὸς ὢν πλούσιος ἐν ἐλέει de dia autou pollēn tēn agapēn hēn ēgapēsen hēmas Ho Theos ōn plousios en eleei — NA/TR · 4

made [us] alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. [It is] by grace you have been saved!
συνεζωοποίησεν τῷ Χριστῷ καὶ ἡμᾶς ὄντας νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι synezōopoiēsen tō Christō kai hēmas ontas nekrous tois paraptōmasin chariti este sesōsmenoi — NA/TR · 5

And [God] raised [us] up with [Christ] and seated [us with Him] in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
καὶ συνήγειρεν καὶ συνεκάθισεν ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ kai synēgeiren kai synekathisen en tois epouraniois en Christō Iēsou — NA/TR · 6

in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, [demonstrated] by [His] kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
ἵνα ἐν τοῖς τοῖς ἐπερχομένοις αἰῶσιν ἐνδείξηται τὸ ὑπερβάλλον πλοῦτος τῆς αὐτοῦ χάριτος ἐν χρηστότητι ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ hina en tois tois eperchomenois aiōsin endeixētai to hyperballon ploutos tēs autou charitos en chrēstotēti eph’ hēmas en Christō Iēsou — NA/TR · 7

For [it is] by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; [it is] the gift of God,
γὰρ Τῇ χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι διὰ πίστεως καὶ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐξ ὑμῶν τὸ δῶρον Θεοῦ gar Tē chariti este sesōsmenoi dia pisteōs kai touto ouk ex hymōn to dōron Theou — NA/TR · 8

not by works, so that no one can boast.
οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἵνα μή τις καυχήσηται ouk ex ergōn hina mē tis kauchēsētai — NA/TR · 9

For we are [God’s] workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life…
γάρ ἐσμεν αὐτοῦ ποίημα κτισθέντες ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἐπὶ ἀγαθοῖς ἔργοις οἷς ὁ Θεὸς προητοίμασεν ἵνα περιπατήσωμεν ἐν αὐτοῖς gar esmen autou poiēma ktisthentes en Christō Iēsou epi agathois ergois hois ho Theos proētoimasen hina peripatēsōmen en autois — NA/TR · 10
One in Christ

Therefore remember that formerly you who [are] Gentiles in [the] flesh [and] called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision ({that done} in [the] body by human hands)—

[remember] that at that time you were separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, without… hope and without God in the world.
ὅτι τῷ ἐκείνῳ καιρῷ ἦτε χωρὶς Χριστοῦ ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι τῆς πολιτείας τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ξένοι τῶν διαθηκῶν τῆς ἐπαγγελίας μὴ ἔχοντες ἐλπίδα καὶ ἄθεοι ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ hoti tō ekeinō kairō ēte chōris Christou apēllotriōmenoi tēs politeias tou Israēl kai xenoi tōn diathēkōn tēs epangelias mē echontes elpida kai atheoi en tō kosmō — NA/TR · 12

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
δὲ νυνὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ὑμεῖς οἵ ποτε ὄντες μακρὰν ἐγενήθητε ἐγγὺς ἐν τῷ αἵματι τοῦ Χριστοῦ de nyni en Christō Iēsou hymeis hoi pote ontes makran egenēthēte engys en tō haimati tou Christou — NA/TR · 13

For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility
γάρ Αὐτὸς ἐστιν ἡμῶν ἡ εἰρήνη ὁ ποιήσας τὰ ἀμφότερα ἓν καὶ λύσας τὸ μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ τὴν ἔχθραν gar Autos estin hēmōn hē eirēnē ho poiēsas ta amphotera hen kai lysas to mesotoichon tou phragmou tēn echthran — NA/TR · 14

by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments [and] decrees. [ He did this ] to create in Himself one new man [out of] the two, [thus] making peace
καταργήσας ἐν αὐτοῦ τῇ σαρκὶ τὸν νόμον τῶν ἐντολῶν ἐν δόγμασιν ἵνα κτίσῃ ἐν αὑτῷ ἕνα καινὸν ἄνθρωπον εἰς τοὺς δύο ποιῶν εἰρήνην katargēsas en autou tē sarki ton nomon tōn entolōn en dogmasin hina ktisē en hautō hena kainon anthrōpon eis tous dyo poiōn eirēnēn — NA/TR · 15

and reconciling both [of them] to God in one body through the cross, by which He put to death [their] hostility.
καὶ ἀποκαταλλάξῃ τοὺς ἀμφοτέρους τῷ Θεῷ ἐν ἑνὶ σώματι διὰ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἐν αὐτῷ ἀποκτείνας τὴν ἔχθραν kai apokatallaxē tous amphoterous tō Theō en heni sōmati dia tou staurou en autō apokteinas tēn echthran — NA/TR · 16

- He came [and] preached peace to you who [were] far away and peace to those [who were] near.
Καὶ ἐλθὼν εὐηγγελίσατο εἰρήνην ὑμῖν τοῖς μακρὰν καὶ εἰρήνην τοῖς ἐγγύς Kai elthōn euēngelisato eirēnēn hymin tois makran kai eirēnēn tois engys — NA/TR · 17

For through Him vvv we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
ὅτι δι’ αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀμφότεροι ἔχομεν τὴν προσαγωγὴν πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα ἐν ἑνὶ Πνεύματι hoti di’ autou hoi amphoteroi echomen tēn prosagōgēn pros ton Patera en heni Pneumati — NA/TR · 18
Christ Our Cornerstone

Therefore… you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household…,
Ἄρα οὖν ἐστὲ οὐκέτι ξένοι καὶ πάροικοι ἀλλὰ ἐστὲ συμπολῖται τῶν ἁγίων καὶ οἰκεῖοι τοῦ Θεοῦ Ara oun este ouketi xenoi kai paroikoi alla este sympolitai tōn hagiōn kai oikeioi tou Theou — NA/TR · 19

built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, [with] Christ Jesus Himself as [the] cornerstone.
ἐποικοδομηθέντες ἐπὶ τῷ θεμελίῳ τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ προφητῶν Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ αὐτοῦ ὄντος ἀκρογωνιαίου epoikodomēthentes epi tō themeliō tōn apostolōn kai prophētōn Christou Iēsou autou ontos akrogōniaiou — NA/TR · 20

In Him the whole building is fitted together [and] grows into a holy temple in [the] Lord.
ἐν ᾧ πᾶσα οἰκοδομὴ συναρμολογουμένη αὔξει εἰς ἅγιον ναὸν ἐν Κυρίῳ en hō pasa oikodomē synarmologoumenē auxei eis hagion naon en Kyriō — NA/TR · 21

[And] in [Him] you too {are} being built together into a dwelling place for God in [His] Spirit.
ἐν ᾧ ὑμεῖς καὶ συνοικοδομεῖσθε εἰς κατοικητήριον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν Πνεύματι en hō hymeis kai synoikodomeisthe eis katoikētērion tou Theou en Pneumati — NA/TR · 22
