Chapter 5

Imitators of God

1

Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children,

Γίνεσθε μιμηταὶ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὖν ὡς ἀγαπητά τέκνα Ginesthe mimētai tou Theou oun hōs agapēta tekna — NA/TR · 1

and walk in love, just as… Christ loved us and gave Himself up… for us as vvv a fragrant sacrificial offering to God.

καὶ περιπατεῖτε ἐν ἀγάπῃ καθὼς καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς καὶ παρέδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν εἰς ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας καὶ θυσίαν προσφορὰν τῷ Θεῷ kai peripateite en agapē kathōs kai ho Christos ēgapēsen hēmas kai paredōken heauton hyper hēmōn eis osmēn euōdias kai thysian prosphoran tō Theō — NA/TR · 2

But among you, as is proper among the saints, vvv there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, [or] of any kind of impurity, or of greed.

δὲ ἐν ὑμῖν καθὼς πρέπει ἁγίοις μηδὲ ὀνομαζέσθω Πορνεία καὶ πᾶσα ἀκαθαρσία ἢ πλεονεξία de en hymin kathōs prepei hagiois mēde onomazesthō Porneia kai pasa akatharsia ē pleonexia — NA/TR · 3

[Nor should there be] obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking, which vvv are out of character, but rather thanksgiving.

καὶ αἰσχρότης καὶ μωρολογία ἢ εὐτραπελία ἃ οὐκ ἀνῆκεν ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον εὐχαριστία kai aischrotēs kai mōrologia ē eutrapelia ha ouk anēken alla mallon eucharistia — NA/TR · 4

For of this vvv you can be sure -: [No] immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater) has [any] inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

γὰρ τοῦτο ἴστε γινώσκοντες ὅτι πᾶς πόρνος ἢ ἀκάθαρτος ἢ πλεονέκτης ὅ ἐστιν εἰδωλολάτρης ἔχει οὐκ κληρονομίαν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ Θεοῦ gar touto iste ginōskontes hoti pas pornos ē akathartos ē pleonektēs ho estin eidōlolatrēs echei ouk klēronomian en tē basileia tou Christou kai Theou — NA/TR · 5

{Let} no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.

Μηδεὶς ἀπατάτω ὑμᾶς κενοῖς λόγοις γὰρ διὰ ταῦτα τοῦ ἡ ὀργὴ Θεοῦ ἔρχεται ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας Mēdeis apatatō hymas kenois logois gar dia tauta tou hē orgē Theou erchetai epi tous huious tēs apeitheias — NA/TR · 6

Therefore {do} not be partakers with them.

οὖν μὴ γίνεσθε συμμέτοχοι αὐτῶν oun mē ginesthe symmetochoi autōn — NA/TR · 7

Children of Light

For you were once darkness, but now [you are] light in [the] Lord. Walk as children of light,

γάρ Ἦτε ποτε σκότος δὲ νῦν φῶς ἐν Κυρίῳ περιπατεῖτε ὡς τέκνα φωτὸς gar Ēte pote skotos de nyn phōs en Kyriō peripateite hōs tekna phōtos — NA/TR · 8

for the fruit of the light [consists] in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.

γὰρ ὁ καρπὸς τοῦ φωτὸς ἐν πάσῃ ἀγαθωσύνῃ καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ gar ho karpos tou phōtos en pasē agathōsynē kai dikaiosynē kai alētheia — NA/TR · 9

Test and prove what vvv pleases the Lord.

δοκιμάζοντες τί ἐστιν εὐάρεστον τῷ Κυρίῳ dokimazontes ti estin euareston tō Kyriō — NA/TR · 10

  • vvv Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but… rather expose [them].

Καὶ μὴ συνκοινωνεῖτε τοῖς τοῖς ἀκάρποις ἔργοις τοῦ σκότους δὲ καὶ μᾶλλον ἐλέγχετε Kai mē synkoinōneite tois tois akarpois ergois tou skotous de kai mallon elenchete — NA/TR · 11

For it is shameful even to mention what [the disobedient] do… in secret.

γὰρ ἐστιν αἰσχρόν καὶ λέγειν τὰ γινόμενα ὑπ’ αὐτῶν κρυφῇ gar estin aischron kai legein ta ginomena hyp’ autōn kryphē — NA/TR · 12

  • But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that is illuminated becomes a light [itself].

τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐλεγχόμενα ὑπὸ τοῦ φωτὸς φανεροῦται γὰρ πᾶν τὸ φανερούμενον ἐστιν φῶς ta de panta elenchomena hypo tou phōtos phaneroutai gar pan to phaneroumenon estin phōs — NA/TR · 13

So it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.

διὸ λέγει Ἔγειρε ὁ καθεύδων καὶ ἀνάστα ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ ὁ Χριστός ἐπιφαύσει σοι dio legei Egeire ho katheudōn kai anasta ek tōn nekrōn kai ho Christos epiphausei soi — NA/TR · 14

Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,

ἀκριβῶς Βλέπετε οὖν πῶς περιπατεῖτε μὴ ὡς ἄσοφοι ἀλλ’ ὡς σοφοί akribōs Blepete oun pōs peripateite mē hōs asophoi all’ hōs sophoi — NA/TR · 15

redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

ἐξαγοραζόμενοι τὸν καιρόν ὅτι αἱ ἡμέραι εἰσιν πονηραί exagorazomenoi ton kairon hoti hai hēmerai eisin ponērai — NA/TR · 16

Therefore… {do} not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will [is].

διὰ τοῦτο μὴ γίνεσθε ἄφρονες ἀλλὰ συνίετε τί τὸ τοῦ Κυρίου θέλημα dia touto mē ginesthe aphrones alla syniete ti to tou Kyriou thelēma — NA/TR · 17

  • {Do} not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with [the] Spirit.

καὶ μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ ἐν ᾧ ἐστιν ἀσωτία ἀλλὰ πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι kai mē methyskesthe oinō en hō estin asōtia alla plērousthe en Pneumati — NA/TR · 18

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord,

λαλοῦντες ἑαυτοῖς ἐν ψαλμοῖς καὶ ὕμνοις καὶ πνευματικαῖς ᾠδαῖς ᾄδοντες καὶ ψάλλοντες τῇ ὑμῶν καρδίᾳ τῷ Κυρίῳ lalountes heautois en psalmois kai hymnois kai pneumatikais ōdais adontes kai psallontes tē hymōn kardia tō Kyriō — NA/TR · 19

always giving thanks to God [the] Father for everything in [the] name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wives and Husbands

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Ὑποτασσόμενοι ἀλλήλοις ἐν φόβῳ Χριστοῦ Hypotassomenoi allēlois en phobō Christou — NA/TR · 21

  • Wives, [submit] to your husbands as to the Lord.

Αἱ γυναῖκες τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ Hai gynaikes tois idiois andrasin hōs tō Kyriō — NA/TR · 22

For [the] husband is [the] head of the wife as Christ [is the] head of the church, [His] body, [of which] He [is the] Savior.

ὅτι ἀνήρ ἐστιν κεφαλὴ τῆς γυναικὸς καὶ ὡς ὁ Χριστὸς κεφαλὴ τῆς ἐκκλησίας τοῦ σώματος αὐτὸς σωτὴρ hoti anēr estin kephalē tēs gynaikos kai hōs ho Christos kephalē tēs ekklēsias tou sōmatos autos sōtēr — NA/TR · 23

Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives [should submit] to their husbands in everything.

ἀλλὰ ὡς ἡ ἐκκλησία ὑποτάσσεται τῷ Χριστῷ οὕτως καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες τοῖς ἀνδράσιν ἐν παντί alla hōs hē ekklēsia hypotassetai tō Christō houtōs kai hai gynaikes tois andrasin en panti — NA/TR · 24

  • Husbands, love [your] wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up… for her

Οἱ ἄνδρες ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας καὶ καθὼς ὁ Χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν τὴν ἐκκλησίαν καὶ παρέδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ αὐτῆς Hoi andres agapate tas gynaikas kai kathōs ho Christos ēgapēsen tēn ekklēsian kai paredōken heauton hyper autēs — NA/TR · 25

to sanctify her, cleansing [her] by the washing with water through [the] word,

ἵνα ἁγιάσῃ αὐτὴν καθαρίσας τῷ λουτρῷ τοῦ ὕδατος ἐν ῥήματι hina hagiasē autēn katharisas tō loutrō tou hydatos en rhēmati — NA/TR · 26

[and] to present her to Himself as a glorious church, vvv without stain or wrinkle or any such [blemish], but - holy and blameless.

ἵνα παραστήσῃ αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ ἔνδοξον τὴν ἐκκλησίαν μὴ ἔχουσαν σπίλον ἢ ῥυτίδα ἤ τι τῶν τοιούτων ἀλλ’ ἵνα ᾖ ἁγία καὶ ἄμωμος hina parastēsē autos heautō endoxon tēn ekklēsian mē echousan spilon ē rhytida ē ti tōn toioutōn all’ hina ē hagia kai amōmos — NA/TR · 27

In the same way…, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

Οὕτως καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες ὀφείλουσιν ἀγαπᾶν τὰς ἑαυτῶν γυναῖκας ὡς τὰ ἑαυτῶν σώματα ὁ ἀγαπῶν ἑαυτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα ἀγαπᾷ ἑαυτὸν Houtōs kai hoi andres opheilousin agapan tas heautōn gynaikas hōs ta heautōn sōmata ho agapōn heautou tēn gynaika agapa heauton — NA/TR · 28

Indeed, no one ever hated his [own] body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ [does] the church.

γάρ οὐδεὶς ποτε ἐμίσησεν ἑαυτοῦ τὴν σάρκα ἀλλὰ ἐκτρέφει καὶ θάλπει αὐτήν καθὼς ὁ Χριστὸς καὶ τὴν ἐκκλησίαν gar oudeis pote emisēsen heautou tēn sarka alla ektrephei kai thalpei autēn kathōs ho Christos kai tēn ekklēsian — NA/TR · 29

For we are members of His body.

ὅτι ἐσμὲν μέλη τοῦ αὐτοῦ σώματος hoti esmen melē tou autou sōmatos — NA/TR · 30

“For this reason… a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become… one flesh.”

Ἀντὶ τούτου ἄνθρωπος καταλείψει τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ προσκολληθήσεται πρὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ οἱ δύο ἔσονται εἰς μίαν σάρκα Anti toutou anthrōpos kataleipsei ton patera kai tēn mētera kai proskollēthēsetai pros autou tēn gynaika kai hoi dyo esontai eis mian sarka — NA/TR · 31

This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.

τοῦτο τὸ μυστήριον ἐστίν μέγα δὲ ἐγὼ λέγω εἰς Χριστὸν καὶ εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν touto to mystērion estin mega de egō legō eis Christon kai eis tēn ekklēsian — NA/TR · 32

Nevertheless, each one… of you also… must love his wife as [he loves] himself, and the wife must respect [her] husband.

πλὴν οἱ ἕκαστος καθ’ ἕνα ὑμεῖς καὶ οὕτως ἀγαπάτω ἑαυτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα ὡς ἑαυτόν δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ἵνα φοβῆται τὸν ἄνδρα plēn hoi hekastos kath’ hena hymeis kai houtōs agapatō heautou tēn gynaika hōs heauton de hē gynē hina phobētai ton andra — NA/TR · 33
