Paul’s Ministry

- You yourselves know, brothers, that our visit to you was not in vain.
γὰρ Αὐτοὶ οἴδατε ἀδελφοί ὅτι ἡμῶν τὴν εἴσοδον τὴν πρὸς ὑμᾶς γέγονεν οὐ κενὴ gar Autoi oidate adelphoi hoti hēmōn tēn eisodon tēn pros hymas gegonen ou kenē — NA/TR · 1

As you are aware, we had already endured suffering and shameful treatment in Philippi. But in the face of strong opposition, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God.
καθὼς οἴδατε προπαθόντες καὶ ὑβρισθέντες ἐν Φιλίπποις ἀλλὰ ἐν πολλῷ ἀγῶνι ἐπαρρησιασάμεθα ἐν ἡμῶν τῷ Θεῷ λαλῆσαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Θεοῦ kathōs oidate propathontes kai hybristhentes en Philippois alla en pollō agōni eparrēsiasametha en hēmōn tō Theō lalēsai pros hymas to euangelion tou Theou — NA/TR · 2

For our appeal does not arise from deceit [or] ulterior motives [or] trickery.
γὰρ ἡμῶν Ἡ παράκλησις οὐκ ἐκ πλάνης οὐδὲ ἐξ ἀκαθαρσίας οὐδὲ ἐν δόλῳ gar hēmōn Hē paraklēsis ouk ek planēs oude ex akatharsias oude en dolō — NA/TR · 3

Instead, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, not in order to please men but God, who examines our hearts.
ἀλλὰ οὕτως λαλοῦμεν καθὼς δεδοκιμάσμεθα ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ πιστευθῆναι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον οὐχ ὡς ἀρέσκοντες ἀνθρώποις ἀλλὰ Θεῷ τῷ δοκιμάζοντι ἡμῶν τὰς καρδίας alla houtōs laloumen kathōs dedokimasmetha hypo tou Theou pisteuthēnai to euangelion ouch hōs areskontes anthrōpois alla Theō tō dokimazonti hēmōn tas kardias — NA/TR · 4

vvv As you know, vvv vvv we never used… words of flattery [or] [any] pretext for greed. God [is] [our] witness!
γάρ καθὼς οἴδατε οὔτε ποτε ἐγενήθημεν ἐν λόγῳ κολακείας οὔτε ἐν προφάσει πλεονεξίας Θεὸς μάρτυς gar kathōs oidate oute pote egenēthēmen en logō kolakeias oute en prophasei pleonexias Theos martys — NA/TR · 5

Nor did we seek - praise from you [or] from anyone else, [although] as apostles of Christ we had authority vvv to demand [it]…
οὔτε ζητοῦντες ἐξ ἀνθρώπων δόξαν οὔτε ἀφ’ ὑμῶν οὔτε ἀπ’ ἄλλων ὡς ἀπόστολοι Χριστοῦ δυνάμενοι εἶναι βάρει ἐν oute zētountes ex anthrōpōn doxan oute aph’ hymōn oute ap’ allōn hōs apostoloi Christou dynamenoi einai barei en — NA/TR · 6

On the contrary, we were gentle among you -, like a nursing mother vvv caring for her children.

vvv We cared so deeply [that] we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our own lives as well. That is how beloved you have become to us.
οὕτως ὁμειρόμενοι ὑμῶν εὐδοκοῦμεν μεταδοῦναι ὑμῖν οὐ μόνον τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλὰ τὰς ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς καὶ διότι ἀγαπητοὶ ἐγενήθητε ἡμῖν houtōs homeiromenoi hymōn eudokoumen metadounai hymin ou monon to euangelion tou Theou alla tas heautōn psychas kai dioti agapētoi egenēthēte hēmin — NA/TR · 8

Surely you recall…, brothers, our labor and toil. We worked night and day so that vvv vvv we would not be a burden to anyone while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.
Μνημονεύετε γάρ ἀδελφοί ἡμῶν τὸν κόπον καὶ τὸν μόχθον ἐργαζόμενοι νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας πρὸς μὴ τὸ ἐπιβαρῆσαί τινα ὑμῶν ἐκηρύξαμεν εἰς ὑμᾶς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Θεοῦ Mnēmoneuete gar adelphoi hēmōn ton kopon kai ton mochthon ergazomenoi nyktos kai hēmeras pros mē to epibarēsai tina hymōn ekēryxamen eis hymas to euangelion tou Theou — NA/TR · 9

You [are] witnesses, and [so is] God, of how holy, righteous, and blameless our conduct was among you who believed.
ὑμεῖς μάρτυρες καὶ ὁ Θεός ὡς ὁσίως καὶ δικαίως καὶ ἀμέμπτως ἐγενήθημεν ὑμῖν τοῖς πιστεύουσιν hymeis martyres kai ho Theos hōs hosiōs kai dikaiōs kai amemptōs egenēthēmen hymin tois pisteuousin — NA/TR · 10

For you know that [we treated] each of you as a father [treats] his own children—
καθάπερ οἴδατε ὡς ἕκαστον ἕνα ὑμῶν ὡς πατὴρ ἑαυτοῦ τέκνα kathaper oidate hōs hekaston hena hymōn hōs patēr heautou tekna — NA/TR · 11

encouraging [you], comforting you, and urging you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
παρακαλοῦντες καὶ παραμυθούμενοι ὑμᾶς καὶ μαρτυρόμενοι εἰς ὑμᾶς τὸ περιπατεῖν ἀξίως τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ καλοῦντος ὑμᾶς εἰς ἑαυτοῦ τὴν βασιλείαν καὶ δόξαν parakalountes kai paramythoumenoi hymas kai martyromenoi eis hymas to peripatein axiōs tou Theou tou kalountos hymas eis heautou tēn basileian kai doxan — NA/TR · 12

And… we continually thank God because -, when you received [the] word of God that you heard from us, you accepted [it] not [as the] word of men, but as it truly is…, [the] word of God, which is also [now] at work in you who believe.
Καὶ καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀδιαλείπτως εὐχαριστοῦμεν τῷ Θεῷ ὅτι διὰ τοῦτο παραλαβόντες λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκοῆς παρ’ ἡμῶν ἐδέξασθε οὐ λόγον ἀνθρώπων ἀλλὰ καθὼς ἀληθῶς ἐστὶν λόγον Θεοῦ ὃς καὶ ἐνεργεῖται ἐν ὑμῖν τοῖς πιστεύουσιν Kai kai hēmeis adialeiptōs eucharistoumen tō Theō hoti dia touto paralabontes logon tou Theou akoēs par’ hēmōn edexasthe ou logon anthrōpōn alla kathōs alēthōs estin logon Theou hos kai energeitai en hymin tois pisteuousin — NA/TR · 13

For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Judea that are in Christ Jesus. You suffered from [your] own countrymen the very things - they [suffered] from the Jews,
γὰρ Ὑμεῖς ἀδελφοί ἐγενήθητε μιμηταὶ τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ τῶν οὐσῶν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ὅτι ὑμεῖς καὶ ἐπάθετε ὑπὸ τῶν ἰδίων συμφυλετῶν τὰ αὐτὰ καθὼς αὐτοὶ καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων gar Hymeis adelphoi egenēthēte mimētai tōn ekklēsiōn tou Theou en tē Ioudaia tōn ousōn en Christō Iēsou hoti hymeis kai epathete hypo tōn idiōn symphyletōn ta auta kathōs autoi kai hypo tōn Ioudaiōn — NA/TR · 14

who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and drove us out {as well}… vvv They are displeasing to God and hostile to all men,
τῶν ἀποκτεινάντων καὶ τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν καὶ τοὺς προφήτας καὶ ἐκδιωξάντων ἡμᾶς καὶ μὴ ἀρεσκόντων Θεῷ καὶ ἐναντίων πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις tōn apokteinantōn kai ton Kyrion Iēsoun kai tous prophētas kai ekdiōxantōn hēmas kai mē areskontōn Theō kai enantiōn pasin anthrōpois — NA/TR · 15

hindering us from telling the Gentiles how they may be saved. As a result, {they} continue to heap up their sins {to full capacity}; the utmost wrath has come upon them.
κωλυόντων ἡμᾶς λαλῆσαι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἵνα σωθῶσιν εἰς πάντοτε τὸ ἀναπληρῶσαι αὐτῶν τὰς ἁμαρτίας δὲ εἰς τέλος ἡ ὀργὴ ἔφθασεν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς kōlyontōn hēmas lalēsai tois ethnesin hina sōthōsin eis pantote to anaplērōsai autōn tas hamartias de eis telos hē orgē ephthasen ep’ autous — NA/TR · 16
Paul’s Longing to Visit

Brothers, although we were torn away from you for a short time… (in person, not in heart), [our] desire to see you face [to face] vvv was even more intense.

For we wanted to come to you— indeed I, Paul, [tried] again and again— but Satan obstructed us.
διότι ἠθελήσαμεν ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς μὲν ἐγὼ Παῦλος καὶ ἅπαξ καὶ δίς καὶ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἐνέκοψεν ἡμᾶς dioti ēthelēsamen elthein pros hymas men egō Paulos kai hapax kai dis kai ho Satanas enekopsen hēmas — NA/TR · 18

After all, who [is] our hope, [our] joy, [our] crown of boasting, if it is not you yourselves in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?
γὰρ τίς ἡμῶν ἐλπὶς ἢ χαρὰ ἢ στέφανος καυχήσεως ἢ οὐχὶ καὶ ὑμεῖς ἔμπροσθεν ἡμῶν τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ ἐν αὐτοῦ τῇ παρουσίᾳ gar tis hēmōn elpis ē chara ē stephanos kauchēseōs ē ouchi kai hymeis emprosthen hēmōn tou Kyriou Iēsou en autou tē parousia — NA/TR · 19

You are indeed our glory and [our] joy.
