Chapter 1

Greetings to the Thessalonians

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of [the] Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are obligated to thank God for you all the time, brothers, as is fitting, because your faith is growing more and more, and vvv vvv vvv your love for one another is increasing.

ὀφείλομεν Εὐχαριστεῖν τῷ Θεῷ περὶ ὑμῶν πάντοτε ἀδελφοί καθὼς ἐστιν ἄξιόν ὅτι ὑμῶν ἡ πίστις ὑπεραυξάνει καὶ ἑνὸς ἑκάστου πάντων ὑμῶν ἡ ἀγάπη εἰς ἀλλήλους πλεονάζει opheilomen Eucharistein tō Theō peri hymōn pantote adelphoi kathōs estin axion hoti hymōn hē pistis hyperauxanei kai henos hekastou pantōn hymōn hē agapē eis allēlous pleonazei — NA/TR · 3

That is why we boast among God’s churches - about your perseverance and faith in the face of all [the] persecution and affliction you are enduring.

ὥστε ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς ἐνκαυχᾶσθαι ἐν τοῦ Θεοῦ ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις ἐν ὑμῖν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τῆς ὑπομονῆς καὶ πίστεως ἐν πᾶσιν ὑμῶν τοῖς διωγμοῖς καὶ ταῖς θλίψεσιν αἷς ἀνέχεσθε hōste hēmas autous enkauchasthai en tou Theou tais ekklēsiais en hymin hyper hymōn tēs hypomonēs kai pisteōs en pasin hymōn tois diōgmois kai tais thlipsesin hais anechesthe — NA/TR · 4

Christ’s Coming

[ All this is ] clear evidence - of God’s righteous judgment. And so you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.

Ἔνδειγμα τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ δικαίας κρίσεως τὸ εἰς ὑμᾶς καταξιωθῆναι τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑπὲρ ἧς καὶ πάσχετε Endeigma tēs tou Theou dikaias kriseōs to eis hymas kataxiōthēnai tēs basileias tou Theou hyper hēs kai paschete — NA/TR · 5

After all, [it is] only right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,

εἴπερ δίκαιον παρὰ Θεῷ ἀνταποδοῦναι θλῖψιν τοῖς θλίβουσιν ὑμᾶς eiper dikaion para Theō antapodounai thlipsin tois thlibousin hymas — NA/TR · 6

and to grant relief to you who are oppressed and to us [as well]. [This will take place when] the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels

καὶ ἄνεσιν ὑμῖν τοῖς θλιβομένοις μεθ’ ἡμῶν ἐν τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ τῇ ἀποκαλύψει ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ δυνάμεως ἀγγέλων kai anesin hymin tois thlibomenois meth’ hēmōn en tou Kyriou Iēsou tē apokalypsei ap’ ouranou met’ autou dynameōs angelōn — NA/TR · 7

in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance on those who vvv do not know God and vvv do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

ἐν φλογός πυρὶ διδόντος ἐκδίκησιν τοῖς μὴ εἰδόσιν Θεὸν καὶ τοῖς μὴ ὑπακούουσιν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ ἡμῶν τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ en phlogos pyri didontos ekdikēsin tois mē eidosin Theon kai tois mē hypakouousin tō euangeliō hēmōn tou Kyriou Iēsou — NA/TR · 8

[They] will suffer [the] penalty of eternal destruction, separated from [the] presence of the Lord and the glory of His might,

οἵτινες τίσουσιν δίκην αἰώνιον ὄλεθρον ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς δόξης τῆς αὐτοῦ ἰσχύος hoitines tisousin dikēn aiōnion olethron apo prosōpou tou Kyriou kai apo tēs doxēs tēs autou ischyos — NA/TR · 9

on [the] day He comes to be glorified in His saints and regarded with wonder by all who have believed, including you who have believed our testimony.

ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐνδοξασθῆναι ἐν αὐτοῦ τοῖς ἁγίοις καὶ θαυμασθῆναι ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς πιστεύσασιν ὅτι ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἐπιστεύθη ἡμῶν τὸ μαρτύριον en ekeinē tē hēmera hotan elthē endoxasthēnai en autou tois hagiois kai thaumasthēnai en pasin tois pisteusasin hoti eph’ hymas episteuthē hēmōn to martyrion — NA/TR · 10

To this end…, we always pray… for you, that our God vvv will count you worthy of [His] calling, and [that] vvv vvv He will powerfully fulfill [your] every good desire and work of faith,

Εἰς ὃ καὶ προσευχόμεθα πάντοτε περὶ ὑμῶν ἵνα ἡμῶν ὁ Θεὸς ὑμᾶς ἀξιώσῃ τῆς κλήσεως καὶ ἐν δυνάμει πληρώσῃ πᾶσαν ἀγαθωσύνης εὐδοκίαν καὶ ἔργον πίστεως Eis ho kai proseuchometha pantote peri hymōn hina hēmōn ho Theos hymas axiōsē tēs klēseōs kai en dynamei plērōsē pasan agathōsynēs eudokian kai ergon pisteōs — NA/TR · 11

so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and of [the] Lord Jesus Christ.
