Chapter 3
Qualifications for Overseers
1
[This is] a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble task.
Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος εἴ τις ὀρέγεται ἐπισκοπῆς ἐπιθυμεῖ καλοῦ ἔργου Pistos ho logos ei tis oregetai episkopēs epithymei kalou ergou — NA/TR · 1

An overseer, then, must be above reproach, [the] husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,

not dependent on wine, not violent but gentle, peaceable, [and] free of the love of money.

[An overseer must] manage [his] own household well [and] keep [his] children under control, with complete dignity.
προϊστάμενον τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς ἔχοντα τέκνα ἐν ὑποταγῇ μετὰ πάσης σεμνότητος proistamenon tou idiou oikou kalōs echonta tekna en hypotagē meta pasēs semnotētos — NA/TR · 4

[For] if someone {does} not know how to manage [his] own household, [how] can he care for [the] church of God?
δέ εἰ τις οὐκ οἶδεν πῶς προστῆναι τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου ἐπιμελήσεται ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ de ei tis ouk oiden pōs prostēnai tou idiou oikou epimelēsetai ekklēsias Theou — NA/TR · 5

[He must] not [be] a recent convert, vvv vvv or he may become conceited [and] fall under [ the same ] condemnation as the devil.
μὴ νεόφυτον ἵνα μὴ τυφωθεὶς ἐμπέσῃ εἰς κρίμα τοῦ διαβόλου mē neophyton hina mē typhōtheis empesē eis krima tou diabolou — NA/TR · 6

Furthermore…, he must have a good reputation with vvv outsiders, so that vvv he will not fall into disgrace and [into the] snare of the devil.
δὲ καὶ δεῖ ἔχειν καλὴν μαρτυρίαν ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν ἵνα μὴ ἐμπέσῃ εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν καὶ παγίδα τοῦ διαβόλου de kai dei echein kalēn martyrian apo tōn exōthen hina mē empesē eis oneidismon kai pagida tou diabolou — NA/TR · 7
Qualifications for Deacons

Deacons likewise [must be] dignified, not double-tongued [or] given to much wine [or] greedy for money.
Διακόνους ὡσαύτως σεμνούς μὴ διλόγους μὴ προσέχοντας πολλῷ οἴνῳ μὴ αἰσχροκερδεῖς Diakonous hōsautōs semnous mē dilogous mē prosechontas pollō oinō mē aischrokerdeis — NA/TR · 8

They must hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
ἔχοντας τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως ἐν καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει echontas to mystērion tēs pisteōs en kathara syneidēsei — NA/TR · 9

Additionally…, they must first be tested… Then, if they are above reproach, let them serve as deacons.
καὶ δὲ οὗτοι δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον εἶτα ὄντες ἀνέγκλητοι διακονείτωσαν kai de houtoi dokimazesthōsan prōton eita ontes anenklētoi diakoneitōsan — NA/TR · 10

In the same way, [the] women [must be] dignified, not slanderers, [but] temperate [and] faithful in all things.
ὡσαύτως Γυναῖκας σεμνάς μὴ διαβόλους νηφαλίους πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν hōsautōs Gynaikas semnas mē diabolous nēphalious pistas en pasin — NA/TR · 11

A deacon must be [the] husband of but one wife, a good manager [of his] children and [of his] own household.

For those who have served well [as deacons] acquire for themselves a high standing and great confidence in [the] faith that [is] in Christ Jesus.
γὰρ οἱ διακονήσαντες καλῶς περιποιοῦνται ἑαυτοῖς καλὸν βαθμὸν καὶ πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ gar hoi diakonēsantes kalōs peripoiountai heautois kalon bathmon kai pollēn parrēsian en pistei tē en Christō Iēsou — NA/TR · 13

[Although] I hope to come to you vvv soon, I am writing you these things

- in case I am delayed, so that you will know how each one must conduct himself in God’s household, which is [the] church of [the] living God, [the] pillar and foundation of the truth.
δὲ ἐὰν βραδύνω ἵνα εἰδῇς πῶς δεῖ ἀναστρέφεσθαι ἐν Θεοῦ οἴκῳ ἥτις ἐστὶν ἐκκλησία ζῶντος Θεοῦ στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας de ean bradynō hina eidēs pōs dei anastrephesthai en Theou oikō hētis estin ekklēsia zōntos Theou stylos kai hedraiōma tēs alētheias — NA/TR · 15

vvv By common confession, the mystery of godliness is great: [He] appeared in [the] flesh, was vindicated by [the] Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among [the] nations, was believed in throughout [the] world, was taken up in glory.
