Chapter 3
Heirs of Grace
1
Remind [the believers] to submit to rulers [and] authorities, to be obedient [and] ready for every good work,

to malign no one, [and] to be peaceable [and] gentle, showing full consideration to everyone…

For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, misled, [and] enslaved to all sorts of desires and pleasures— living in malice and envy, being hated [and] hating one another.

But when the kindness of God our Savior and [His] love for mankind appeared,
δὲ Ὅτε ἡ χρηστότης τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν Σωτῆρος καὶ ἡ φιλανθρωπία ἐπεφάνη de Hote hē chrēstotēs tou Theou hēmōn Sōtēros kai hē philanthrōpia epephanē — NA/TR · 4

He saved us, not by [the] righteous deeds - we had done, but according to His mercy, through [the] washing of new birth and renewal by [the] Holy Spirit.
ἔσωσεν ἡμᾶς οὐκ ἐξ ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἔργων τῶν ἃ ἡμεῖς ἐποιήσαμεν ἀλλὰ κατὰ αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔλεος διὰ λουτροῦ παλινγενεσίας καὶ ἀνακαινώσεως Ἁγίου Πνεύματος esōsen hēmas ouk ex en dikaiosynē ergōn tōn ha hēmeis epoiēsamen alla kata autou to eleos dia loutrou palingenesias kai anakainōseōs Hagiou Pneumatos — NA/TR · 5

[ This is the Spirit ] He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
οὗ ἐξέχεεν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς πλουσίως διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἡμῶν τοῦ Σωτῆρος hou execheen eph’ hēmas plousiōs dia Iēsou Christou hēmōn tou Sōtēros — NA/TR · 6

so that, having been justified by [His] grace, we would become heirs with [the] hope of eternal life.

[This] saying [is] trustworthy. And I want you to emphasize… these things, so that those who have believed God will take care to devote themselves to good deeds. These things are excellent and profitable for the people.
ὁ λόγος Πιστὸς καὶ βούλομαί σε διαβεβαιοῦσθαι περὶ τούτων ἵνα οἱ πεπιστευκότες Θεῷ φροντίζωσιν προΐστασθαι καλῶν ἔργων ταῦτά ἐστιν καλὰ καὶ ὠφέλιμα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ho logos Pistos kai boulomai se diabebaiousthai peri toutōn hina hoi pepisteukotes Theō phrontizōsin proistasthai kalōn ergōn tauta estin kala kai ōphelima tois anthrōpois — NA/TR · 8
Avoid Divisions

But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, arguments, and quarrels about [the] law, because [these things] are pointless and worthless.
δὲ περιΐστασο Μωρὰς ζητήσεις καὶ γενεαλογίας καὶ ἔρεις καὶ μάχας νομικὰς γὰρ εἰσὶν ἀνωφελεῖς καὶ μάταιοι de periistaso Mōras zētēseis kai genealogias kai ereis kai machas nomikas gar eisin anōpheleis kai mataioi — NA/TR · 9

Reject a divisive man after a first and second admonition,
παραιτοῦ αἱρετικὸν ἄνθρωπον μετὰ μίαν καὶ δευτέραν νουθεσίαν paraitou hairetikon anthrōpon meta mian kai deuteran nouthesian — NA/TR · 10

knowing that such a man is corrupt and sinful; he is self-condemned.
εἰδὼς ὅτι ὁ τοιοῦτος ἐξέστραπται καὶ ἁμαρτάνει ὢν αὐτοκατάκριτος eidōs hoti ho toioutos exestraptai kai hamartanei ōn autokatakritos — NA/TR · 11
Final Remarks and Greetings

As soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, because I have decided to winter there.

And our [people] must also learn to devote themselves to good works in order to meet [the] pressing needs [of others], so that vvv they will not be unfruitful.
