Chapter 12

A Call to Endurance

1

Therefore, [since] we are surrounded by… such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin [that] so easily entangles, [and] let us run with endurance the race set out for us.

Τοιγαροῦν ἡμεῖς καὶ ἔχοντες περικείμενον ἡμῖν τοσοῦτον νέφος μαρτύρων ἀποθέμενοι πάντα ὄγκον καὶ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν εὐπερίστατον τρέχωμεν δι’ ὑπομονῆς τὸν ἀγῶνα προκείμενον ἡμῖν Toigaroun hēmeis kai echontes perikeimenon hēmin tosouton nephos martyrōn apothemenoi panta onkon kai tēn hamartian euperistaton trechōmen di’ hypomonēs ton agōna prokeimenon hēmin — NA/TR · 1

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of [our] faith, who for the joy set before Him endured [the] cross, scorning [its] shame, and sat down at [the] right hand of the throne of God.

  • Consider Him who endured such hostility… from sinners, so that vvv you will not grow weary [and] lose heart…

γὰρ ἀναλογίσασθε τὸν ὑπομεμενηκότα τοιαύτην ἀντιλογίαν εἰς ἑαυτὸν ὑπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν ἵνα μὴ κάμητε ἐκλυόμενοι ταῖς ὑμῶν ψυχαῖς gar analogisasthe ton hypomemenēkota toiautēn antilogian eis heauton hypo tōn hamartōlōn hina mē kamēte eklyomenoi tais hymōn psychais — NA/TR · 3

God Disciplines His Sons

In your struggle against sin, vvv you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

ἀνταγωνιζόμενοι πρὸς τὴν ἁμαρτίαν Οὔπω ἀντικατέστητε μέχρις αἵματος antagōnizomenoi pros tēn hamartian Oupō antikatestēte mechris haimatos — NA/TR · 4

And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, {do} not take lightly [the] discipline of [the] Lord, and [do not] lose heart [when] He rebukes you.

καὶ ἐκλέλησθε τῆς παρακλήσεως ἥτις διαλέγεται ὑμῖν ὡς υἱοῖς μου Υἱέ μὴ ὀλιγώρει παιδείας Κυρίου μηδὲ ἐκλύου ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ ἐλεγχόμενος kai eklelēsthe tēs paraklēseōs hētis dialegetai hymin hōs huiois mou Huie mē oligōrei paideias Kyriou mēde eklyou hyp’ autou elenchomenos — NA/TR · 5

For [the] Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises every son… He receives.”

Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son vvv is not disciplined [by his] father?

ὑπομένετε Εἰς παιδείαν ὁ Θεός προσφέρεται ὑμῖν ὡς υἱοῖς γὰρ τίς υἱὸς ὃν οὐ παιδεύει πατήρ hypomenete Eis paideian ho Theos prospheretai hymin hōs huiois gar tis huios hon ou paideuei patēr — NA/TR · 7

  • If you do not experience… discipline like everyone vvv else, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.

δὲ εἰ ἐστε χωρίς παιδείας ἧς πάντες γεγόνασιν μέτοχοι ἄρα ἐστε νόθοι καὶ οὐχ υἱοί de ei este chōris paideias hēs pantes gegonasin metochoi ara este nothoi kai ouch huioi — NA/TR · 8

Furthermore…, we have all had vvv vvv earthly fathers who disciplined [us], and we respected [them]. {Should we} not much more… submit to the Father of [our] spirits and live?

εἶτα μὲν εἴχομεν ἡμῶν τῆς σαρκὸς τοὺς πατέρας παιδευτὰς καὶ ἐνετρεπόμεθα οὐ πολὺ δὲ μᾶλλον ὑποταγησόμεθα τῷ Πατρὶ τῶν πνευμάτων καὶ ζήσομεν eita men eichomen hēmōn tēs sarkos tous pateras paideutas kai enetrepometha ou poly de mallon hypotagēsometha tō Patri tōn pneumatōn kai zēsomen — NA/TR · 9

  • [Our fathers] disciplined [us] for vvv vvv a short time as they thought best, but [God disciplines us] for [our] good, so that we may share in His holiness.

γὰρ ἐπαίδευον πρὸς μὲν Οἱ ὀλίγας ἡμέρας κατὰ τὸ αὐτοῖς δοκοῦν δὲ ὁ ἐπὶ τὸ συμφέρον εἰς τὸ μεταλαβεῖν τῆς αὐτοῦ ἁγιότητος gar epaideuon pros men Hoi oligas hēmeras kata to autois dokoun de ho epi to sympheron eis to metalabein tēs autou hagiotētos — NA/TR · 10

  • vvv No discipline seems vvv enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness [and] peace to those who have been trained by it.

δὲ πᾶσα οὐ παιδεία δοκεῖ εἶναι χαρᾶς μὲν πρὸς τὸ παρὸν ἀλλὰ λύπης ὕστερον δὲ ἀποδίδωσιν καρπὸν δικαιοσύνης εἰρηνικὸν τοῖς γεγυμνασμένοις δι’ αὐτῆς de pasa ou paideia dokei einai charas men pros to paron alla lypēs hysteron de apodidōsin karpon dikaiosynēs eirēnikon tois gegymnasmenois di’ autēs — NA/TR · 11

Therefore strengthen [your] limp hands and weak knees.

  • Make straight paths for your feet, so that the lame {may} not be disabled, but rather healed.

καὶ ποιεῖτε ὀρθὰς τροχιὰς τοῖς ὑμῶν ποσὶν ἵνα τὸ χωλὸν μὴ ἐκτραπῇ δὲ μᾶλλον ἰαθῇ kai poieite orthas trochias tois hymōn posin hina to chōlon mē ektrapē de mallon iathē — NA/TR · 13

A Call to Holiness

Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.

διώκετε Εἰρήνην μετὰ πάντων καὶ τὸν ἁγιασμόν χωρὶς οὗ οὐδεὶς ὄψεται τὸν Κύριον diōkete Eirēnēn meta pantōn kai ton hagiasmon chōris hou oudeis opsetai ton Kyrion — NA/TR · 14

See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, [and] that no… root of bitterness springs up to cause trouble and - defile many.

ἐπισκοποῦντες μή τις ὑστερῶν ἀπὸ τῆς χάριτος τοῦ Θεοῦ μή τις ῥίζα πικρίας φύουσα ἄνω ἐνοχλῇ καὶ δι’ αὐτῆς μιανθῶσιν οἱ πολλοί episkopountes mē tis hysterōn apo tēs charitos tou Theou mē tis rhiza pikrias phyousa anō enochlē kai di’ autēs mianthōsin hoi polloi — NA/TR · 15

[See to it] that [no one is] sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his birthright.

μή τις πόρνος ἢ βέβηλος ὡς Ἠσαῦ ὃς ἀντὶ μιᾶς βρώσεως ἀπέδετο ἑαυτοῦ τὰ πρωτοτόκια mē tis pornos ē bebēlos hōs Ēsau hos anti mias brōseōs apedeto heautou ta prōtotokia — NA/TR · 16

For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. vvv He could find no ground for repentance, though he sought [the blessing] with tears.

γὰρ ἴστε ὅτι καὶ μετέπειτα θέλων κληρονομῆσαι τὴν εὐλογίαν ἀπεδοκιμάσθη γὰρ εὗρεν οὐχ τόπον μετανοίας καίπερ ἐκζητήσας αὐτήν μετὰ δακρύων gar iste hoti kai metepeita thelōn klēronomēsai tēn eulogian apedokimasthē gar heuren ouch topon metanoias kaiper ekzētēsas autēn meta dakryōn — NA/TR · 17

An Unshakable Kingdom

For vvv you have not come to [ a mountain that ] can be touched and [that] is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom, and storm;

γὰρ Οὐ προσεληλύθατε ψηλαφωμένῳ καὶ κεκαυμένῳ πυρὶ καὶ γνόφῳ καὶ ζόφῳ καὶ θυέλλῃ gar Ou proselēlythate psēlaphōmenō kai kekaumenō pyri kai gnophō kai zophō kai thyellē — NA/TR · 18

  • to a trumpet blast [or] to a voice… that [made] [its] hearers beg that no further word be spoken -.

καὶ σάλπιγγος ἤχῳ καὶ φωνῇ ῥημάτων ἧς οἱ ἀκούσαντες παρῃτήσαντο μὴ λόγον προστεθῆναι αὐτοῖς kai salpingos ēchō kai phōnē rhēmatōn hēs hoi akousantes parētēsanto mē logon prostethēnai autois — NA/TR · 19

For vvv they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.”

γὰρ οὐκ ἔφερον τὸ διαστελλόμενον Κἂν θηρίον θίγῃ τοῦ ὄρους λιθοβοληθήσεται gar ouk epheron to diastellomenon Kan thērion thigē tou orous lithobolēthēsetai — NA/TR · 20

The sight was so terrifying [that] even Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”

Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, [to the] city of [the] living God, [the] heavenly Jerusalem. [You have come] to myriads of angels

in joyful assembly, [to the] congregation of [the] firstborn, enrolled in heaven. [You have come] to God [the] Judge of all, to [the] spirits of [the] righteous made perfect,

  • to Jesus [the] mediator of a new covenant, and to [the] sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than [the blood] of Abel.

καὶ Ἰησοῦ μεσίτῃ νέας διαθήκης καὶ ῥαντισμοῦ αἵματι λαλοῦντι κρεῖττον παρὰ τὸν Ἅβελ kai Iēsou mesitē neas diathēkēs kai rhantismou haimati lalounti kreitton para ton Habel — NA/TR · 24

See to it that vvv you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if [the people] {did} not escape when they refused Him who warned [them] on earth, how much less [will] we [escape] if we reject Him who [warns us] from heaven?

At that time [His] voice shook the earth, but now He has promised -, vvv “Once more I will shake not only the earth, but heaven as well.”

  • The [words] vvv “Once more signify the removal of what can be shaken— that is, created things— so that the vvv unshakable may remain.

Therefore, [since] we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us be filled with gratitude, [and so]… worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.

“- For our God [is a] consuming fire.”
