Chapter 4

The Sabbath Rest

1

Therefore, [ while ] the promise of entering… His rest still stands, let us be careful that none… of you be deemed to have fallen short [of it].

οὖν ἐπαγγελίας εἰσελθεῖν εἰς αὐτοῦ τὴν κατάπαυσιν καταλειπομένης Φοβηθῶμεν μή‿ ποτε τις ἐξ ὑμῶν δοκῇ ὑστερηκέναι oun epangelias eiselthein eis autou tēn katapausin kataleipomenēs Phobēthōmen mē pote tis ex hymōn dokē hysterēkenai — NA/TR · 1

For we also received the good news just as they [did]; but the message they heard vvv was of no value to them, vvv since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended [it].

γάρ ἐσμεν καὶ εὐηγγελισμένοι καθάπερ κἀκεῖνοι ἀλλ’ ὁ λόγος τῆς ἀκοῆς οὐκ ὠφέλησεν ἐκείνους μὴ συγκεκερασμένους τῇ πίστει τοῖς ἀκούσασιν gar esmen kai euēngelismenoi kathaper kakeinoi all’ ho logos tēs akoēs ouk ōphelēsen ekeinous mē synkekerasmenous tē pistei tois akousasin — NA/TR · 2

Now [we] who have believed enter… [that] rest. [As for the others, ] it is just as [God] has said: “So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘vvv They shall never enter… My rest.’” And yet [His] works have been finished since [the] foundation of [the] world.

γὰρ οἱ πιστεύσαντες Εἰσερχόμεθα εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσιν καθὼς εἴρηκεν Ὡς ὤμοσα ἐν μου τῇ ὀργῇ Εἰ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς μου τὴν κατάπαυσίν Καίτοι τῶν ἔργων γενηθέντων ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου gar hoi pisteusantes Eiserchometha eis tēn katapausin kathōs eirēken Hōs ōmosa en mou tē orgē Ei eiseleusontai eis mou tēn katapausin Kaitoi tōn ergōn genēthentōn apo katabolēs kosmou — NA/TR · 3

For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh [day] in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”

γάρ που εἴρηκεν περὶ τῆς ἑβδόμης οὕτως Καὶ ἐν τῇ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ Θεὸς κατέπαυσεν ἀπὸ πάντων αὐτοῦ τῶν ἔργων gar pou eirēken peri tēs hebdomēs houtōs Kai en tē tē hebdomē hēmera ho Theos katepausen apo pantōn autou tōn ergōn — NA/TR · 4

And again, [as He says] in [the passage above]: vvv “They shall never enter… My rest.

καὶ πάλιν ἐν τούτῳ Εἰ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς μου τὴν κατάπαυσίν kai palin en toutō Ei eiseleusontai eis mou tēn katapausin — NA/TR · 5

Since, then, it remains [for] some to enter… [His rest], and [since] those who formerly heard the good news vvv did not enter because of [their] disobedience,

Ἐπεὶ οὖν ἀπολείπεται τινὰς εἰσελθεῖν εἰς αὐτήν καὶ οἱ πρότερον εὐαγγελισθέντες οὐκ εἰσῆλθον δι’ ἀπείθειαν Epei oun apoleipetai tinas eiselthein eis autēn kai hoi proteron euangelisthentes ouk eisēlthon di’ apeitheian — NA/TR · 6

vvv [God] again designated a certain day [as] “Today, when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, {do} not harden your hearts.”

πάλιν ὁρίζει τινὰ ἡμέραν Σήμερον τοσοῦτον χρόνον μετὰ λέγων ἐν Δαυὶδ καθὼς προείρηται Σήμερον ἐὰν ἀκούσητε αὐτοῦ τῆς φωνῆς μὴ σκληρύνητε ὑμῶν τὰς καρδίας palin horizei tina hēmeran Sēmeron tosouton chronon meta legōn en Dauid kathōs proeirētai Sēmeron ean akousēte autou tēs phōnēs mē sklērynēte hymōn tas kardias — NA/TR · 7

For if Joshua had given them rest…, vvv vvv [God] would not have spoken later… about another day.

γὰρ Εἰ Ἰησοῦς κατέπαυσεν αὐτοὺς ἂν οὐκ ἐλάλει μετὰ ταῦτα περὶ ἄλλης ἡμέρας gar Ei Iēsous katepausen autous an ouk elalei meta tauta peri allēs hēmeras — NA/TR · 8

There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

ἀπολείπεται ἄρα σαββατισμὸς τῷ λαῷ τοῦ Θεοῦ apoleipetai ara sabbatismos tō laō tou Theou — NA/TR · 9

For whoever enters… [God’s] rest also rests from his [own] work, just as God [did] from [His]…

γὰρ ὁ εἰσελθὼν εἰς αὐτοῦ τὴν κατάπαυσιν αὐτὸς καὶ κατέπαυσεν ἀπὸ αὐτοῦ τῶν ἔργων ὥσπερ ὁ Θεός ἀπὸ τῶν ἰδίων gar ho eiselthōn eis autou tēn katapausin autos kai katepausen apo autou tōn ergōn hōsper ho Theos apo tōn idiōn — NA/TR · 10

Let us, therefore, make every effort… to enter… that rest, so that no one will fall by [following] the same pattern of disobedience.

Σπουδάσωμεν οὖν εἰσελθεῖν εἰς ἐκείνην τὴν κατάπαυσιν ἵνα μὴ τις πέσῃ ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ ὑποδείγματι τῆς ἀπειθείας Spoudasōmen oun eiselthein eis ekeinēn tēn katapausin hina mē tis pesē en tō autō hypodeigmati tēs apeitheias — NA/TR · 11

The Living Word

For the word of God [is] living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges [the] thoughts and intentions of [the] heart.

γὰρ ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ Ζῶν καὶ ἐνεργὴς καὶ τομώτερος ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν δίστομον μάχαιραν διϊκνούμενος καὶ ἄχρι μερισμοῦ ψυχῆς καὶ πνεύματος τε ἁρμῶν καὶ μυελῶν καὶ κριτικὸς ἐνθυμήσεων καὶ ἐννοιῶν καρδίας gar ho logos tou Theou Zōn kai energēs kai tomōteros hyper pasan distomon machairan diiknoumenos kai achri merismou psychēs kai pneumatos te harmōn kai myelōn kai kritikos enthymēseōn kai ennoiōn kardias — NA/TR · 12

  • Nothing in all creation is hidden from [God’s] sight…; everything [is] uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we [must give] account.

καὶ οὐκ κτίσις ἔστιν ἀφανὴς ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ δὲ πάντα γυμνὰ καὶ τετραχηλισμένα τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ πρὸς ὃν ἡμῖν ὁ λόγος kai ouk ktisis estin aphanēs enōpion autou de panta gymna kai tetrachēlismena tois ophthalmois autou pros hon hēmin ho logos — NA/TR · 13

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess.

οὖν Ἔχοντες μέγαν ἀρχιερέα διεληλυθότα τοὺς οὐρανούς Ἰησοῦν τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ κρατῶμεν τῆς ὁμολογίας oun Echontes megan archierea dielēlythota tous ouranous Iēsoun ton Huion tou Theou kratōmen tēs homologias — NA/TR · 14

For vvv we do not have a high priest vvv who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but [we have] one who was tempted in every way that [we are], [yet was] without sin.

γὰρ οὐ ἔχομεν ἀρχιερέα μὴ δυνάμενον συμπαθῆσαι ταῖς ἡμῶν ἀσθενείαις δὲ πεπειρασμένον κατὰ πάντα καθ’ ὁμοιότητα χωρὶς ἁμαρτίας gar ou echomen archierea mē dynamenon sympathēsai tais hēmōn astheneiais de pepeirasmenon kata panta kath’ homoiotēta chōris hamartias — NA/TR · 15

vvv Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help [us] in [our] time of need.

οὖν προσερχώμεθα τῷ θρόνῳ τῆς χάριτος μετὰ παρρησίας ἵνα λάβωμεν ἔλεος καὶ εὕρωμεν χάριν εἰς βοήθειαν εὔκαιρον oun proserchōmetha tō thronō tēs charitos meta parrēsias hina labōmen eleos kai heurōmen charin eis boētheian eukairon — NA/TR · 16
