Chapter 4

Living for God’s Glory

1

Therefore, since Christ suffered in [His] body, - arm yourselves with the same resolve, because anyone who has suffered [in his] body is done with sin.

2

Consequently, vvv he does not live out [his] remaining time vvv on earth for human passions, but for [the] will of God.

εἰς μηκέτι βιῶσαι τὸ τὸν ἐπίλοιπον χρόνον ἐν σαρκὶ ἀνθρώπων ἐπιθυμίαις ἀλλὰ θελήματι Θεοῦ eis mēketi biōsai to ton epiloipon chronon en sarki anthrōpōn epithymiais alla thelēmati Theou — NA/TR · 2

3

For [you have spent] enough time in the past carrying out the same desires as the Gentiles: living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and detestable idolatry.

γὰρ ἀρκετὸς ὁ χρόνος παρεληλυθὼς κατειργάσθαι τὸ βούλημα τῶν ἐθνῶν πεπορευμένους ἐν ἀσελγείαις ἐπιθυμίαις οἰνοφλυγίαις κώμοις πότοις καὶ ἀθεμίτοις εἰδωλολατρίαις gar arketos ho chronos parelēlythōs kateirgasthai to boulēma tōn ethnōn peporeumenous en aselgeiais epithymiais oinophlygiais kōmois potois kai athemitois eidōlolatriais — NA/TR · 3

4

Because of this, they consider it strange of you not to plunge with [them] into the same flood of reckless indiscretion, [and] they heap abuse on you.

5

[But they] will have to give an account to Him who is ready to judge [the] living and [the] dead.

6

vvv vvv That is why the gospel was preached even to [those who are now] dead, so that they might be judged as men in [the] flesh, but live according to God in [the] spirit.

γὰρ εἰς τοῦτο εὐηγγελίσθη καὶ νεκροῖς ἵνα κριθῶσι μὲν κατὰ ἀνθρώπους σαρκί δὲ ζῶσι κατὰ Θεὸν πνεύματι gar eis touto euēngelisthē kai nekrois hina krithōsi men kata anthrōpous sarki de zōsi kata Theon pneumati — NA/TR · 6

7

  • The end of all [things] is near. Therefore be clear-minded and sober, so that you can pray.

δὲ τὸ τέλος Πάντων ἤγγικεν οὖν σωφρονήσατε καὶ νήψατε εἰς προσευχάς de to telos Pantōn ēngiken oun sōphronēsate kai nēpsate eis proseuchas — NA/TR · 7

8

Above all, love vvv one another vvv deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

9

Show hospitality to one another without complaining.

φιλόξενοι εἰς ἀλλήλους ἄνευ γογγυσμοῦ philoxenoi eis allēlous aneu gongysmou — NA/TR · 9

10

As good stewards of [the] manifold grace of God, each [of you] [should use] whatever gift he has received to serve one another.

11

If anyone speaks, [he should speak] as vvv one conveying the words of God. If anyone serves, [he should serve] with [the] strength - God provides, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power vvv vvv forever [and] ever. Amen.

εἴ τις λαλεῖ ὡς Θεοῦ λόγια εἴ τις διακονεῖ ὡς ἐξ ἰσχύος ἧς ὁ Θεός χορηγεῖ ἵνα ἐν πᾶσιν ὁ Θεὸς δοξάζηται διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ᾧ ἐστιν ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων ἀμήν ei tis lalei hōs Theou logia ei tis diakonei hōs ex ischyos hēs ho Theos chorēgei hina en pasin ho Theos doxazētai dia Iēsou Christou hō estin hē doxa kai to kratos eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn amēn — NA/TR · 11

Suffering as Christians

12

Beloved, {do} not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you.

13

But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that… you may be overjoyed… at the revelation of His glory.

14

If you are insulted for [the] name of Christ, [you are] blessed, because the Spirit of glory and - of God rests on you.

Εἰ ὀνειδίζεσθε ἐν ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ μακάριοι ὅτι τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς δόξης καὶ τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναπαύεται ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς Ei oneidizesthe en onomati Christou makarioi hoti to Pneuma tēs doxēs kai to tou Theou anapauetai eph’ hymas — NA/TR · 14

15

Indeed, vvv [none] of you should suffer as a murderer or thief or wrongdoer, or even as a meddler.

16

But if [you suffer] as a Christian, vvv do not be ashamed, but glorify God [that you bear] that name.

17

For [it is] time [for] judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what [will] the outcome [be] for those who disobey the gospel of God?

ὅτι ὁ καιρὸς τὸ κρίμα τοῦ ἄρξασθαι ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲ εἰ πρῶτον ἀφ’ ἡμῶν τί τὸ τέλος τῶν ἀπειθούντων τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ hoti ho kairos to krima tou arxasthai apo tou oikou tou Theou de ei prōton aph’ hēmōn ti to telos tōn apeithountōn tō euangeliō tou Theou — NA/TR · 17

18

And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and [the] sinner?”

19

So then…, those who suffer according to God’s will should entrust their souls to [their] faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Ὥστε καὶ οἱ πάσχοντες κατὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τὸ θέλημα παρατιθέσθωσαν αὐτῶν τὰς ψυχὰς πιστῷ Κτίστῃ ἐν ἀγαθοποιΐᾳ Hōste kai hoi paschontes kata tou Theou to thelēma paratithesthōsan autōn tas psychas pistō Ktistē en agathopoiia — NA/TR · 19
