Chapter 21

A New Heaven and a New Earth

1

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and - earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

Καὶ εἶδον καινὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ καινήν γῆν γὰρ ὁ πρῶτος οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ πρώτη γῆ ἀπῆλθαν καὶ ἡ θάλασσα ἔστιν οὐκ ἔτι Kai eidon kainon ouranon kai kainēn gēn gar ho prōtos ouranos kai hē prōtē gē apēlthan kai hē thalassa estin ouk eti — NA/TR · 1

  • I saw the holy city, [the] new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

καὶ εἶδον τὴν τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν καινὴν Ἰερουσαλὴμ καταβαίνουσαν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡτοιμασμένην ὡς νύμφην κεκοσμημένην τῷ αὐτῆς ἀνδρὶ kai eidon tēn tēn hagian polin kainēn Ierousalēm katabainousan ek tou ouranou apo tou Theou hētoimasmenēn hōs nymphēn kekosmēmenēn tō autēs andri — NA/TR · 2

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Behold, the dwelling place of God [is] with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them [as] their God.

Καὶ ἤκουσα μεγάλης φωνῆς ἐκ τοῦ θρόνου λεγούσης Ἰδοὺ ἡ σκηνὴ τοῦ Θεοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ σκηνώσει μετ’ αὐτῶν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἔσονται αὐτοῦ λαοὶ καὶ ὁ Θεὸς αὐτὸς ἔσται μετ’ αὐτῶν αὐτῶν θεός Kai ēkousa megalēs phōnēs ek tou thronou legousēs Idou hē skēnē tou Theou meta tōn anthrōpōn kai skēnōsei met’ autōn kai autoi esontai autou laoi kai ho Theos autos estai met’ autōn autōn theos — NA/TR · 3

‘- He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death [or] mourning [or] crying [or] pain - -, for the former things have passed away.

καὶ ἐξαλείψει πᾶν δάκρυον ἐκ αὐτῶν τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν καὶ ἔσται οὐκ ἔτι ὁ θάνατος οὔτε πένθος οὔτε κραυγὴ οὔτε πόνος ἔσται οὐκ ἔτι ὅτι τὰ πρῶτα ἀπῆλθαν kai exaleipsei pan dakryon ek autōn tōn ophthalmōn kai estai ouk eti ho thanatos oute penthos oute kraugē oute ponos estai ouk eti hoti ta prōta apēlthan — NA/TR · 4

And the [One] seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new. Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.

Καὶ ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ εἶπεν Ἰδοὺ ποιῶ πάντα καινὰ καὶ λέγει Γράψον ὅτι οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι εἰσιν πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί Kai ho kathēmenos epi tō thronō eipen Idou poiō panta kaina kai legei Grapson hoti houtoi hoi logoi eisin pistoi kai alēthinoi — NA/TR · 5

And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life.

καὶ εἶπέν μοι Γέγοναν ἐγὼ εἰμι τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ ἡ ἀρχὴ καὶ τὸ τέλος τῷ διψῶντι ἐγὼ δώσω δωρεάν ἐκ τῆς πηγῆς τοῦ ὕδατος τῆς ζωῆς kai eipen moi Gegonan egō eimi to Alpha kai to Ō hē archē kai to telos tō dipsōnti egō dōsō dōrean ek tēs pēgēs tou hydatos tēs zōēs — NA/TR · 6

The [one who] overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son.

ὁ νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ Θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός ho nikōn klēronomēsei tauta kai esomai autō Theos kai autos estai moi huios — NA/TR · 7

But to [the] cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place [will be] in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.

δὲ Τοῖς δειλοῖς καὶ ἀπίστοις καὶ ἐβδελυγμένοις καὶ φονεῦσιν καὶ πόρνοις καὶ φαρμάκοις καὶ εἰδωλολάτραις καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ψευδέσιν αὐτῶν τὸ μέρος ἐν τῇ λίμνῃ τῇ καιομένῃ πυρὶ καὶ θείῳ ὅ ἐστιν ὁ ὁ δεύτερος θάνατος de Tois deilois kai apistois kai ebdelygmenois kai phoneusin kai pornois kai pharmakois kai eidōlolatrais kai pasin tois pseudesin autōn to meros en tē limnē tē kaiomenē pyri kai theiō ho estin ho ho deuteros thanatos — NA/TR · 8

The New Jerusalem

Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls full of the seven final plagues came and said to me -, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.

Καὶ εἷς ἐκ τῶν ἑπτὰ ἀγγέλων τῶν ἐχόντων τὰς ἑπτὰ φιάλας τῶν γεμόντων τῶν ἑπτὰ τῶν ἐσχάτων πληγῶν ἦλθεν καὶ ἐλάλησεν μετ’ ἐμοῦ λέγων Δεῦρο δείξω σοι τὴν νύμφην τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀρνίου Kai heis ek tōn hepta angelōn tōn echontōn tas hepta phialas tōn gemontōn tōn hepta tōn eschatōn plēgōn ēlthen kai elalēsen met’ emou legōn Deuro deixō soi tēn nymphēn tēn gynaika tou arniou — NA/TR · 9

And he carried me away… in [the] Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the holy city [of] Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God,

Καὶ ἀπήνεγκέν με ἐν Πνεύματι ἐπὶ ὄρος μέγα καὶ ὑψηλόν καὶ ἔδειξέν μοι τὴν τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν Ἰερουσαλὴμ καταβαίνουσαν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ Kai apēnenken me en Pneumati epi oros mega kai hypsēlon kai edeixen moi tēn tēn hagian polin Ierousalēm katabainousan ek tou ouranou apo tou Theou — NA/TR · 10

shining with the glory of God. Its radiance [was] like a most precious jewel, like a jasper…, as clear as crystal.

ἔχουσαν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτῆς ὁ φωστὴρ ὅμοιος τιμιωτάτῳ λίθῳ ὡς ἰάσπιδι λίθῳ κρυσταλλίζοντι echousan tēn doxan tou Theou autēs ho phōstēr homoios timiōtatō lithō hōs iaspidi lithō krystallizonti — NA/TR · 11

[The city] had a great and high wall with twelve gates vvv inscribed - with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve angels at the gates.

ἔχουσα μέγα καὶ ὑψηλόν τεῖχος ἔχουσα δώδεκα πυλῶνας καὶ ἐπιγεγραμμένα ὀνόματα ἅ ἐστιν τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν δώδεκα φυλῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ καὶ δώδεκα ἀγγέλους ἐπὶ τοῖς πυλῶσιν echousa mega kai hypsēlon teichos echousa dōdeka pylōnas kai epigegrammena onomata ha estin ta onomata tōn dōdeka phylōn huiōn Israēl kai dōdeka angelous epi tois pylōsin — NA/TR · 12

[There were] three gates on [the] east, three on [the] north, three on [the] south, and three on [the] west.

τρεῖς πυλῶνες ἀπὸ ἀνατολῆς καὶ τρεῖς πυλῶνες ἀπὸ βορρᾶ καὶ τρεῖς πυλῶνες ἀπὸ νότου καὶ τρεῖς πυλῶνες ἀπὸ δυσμῶν treis pylōnes apo anatolēs kai treis pylōnes apo borra kai treis pylōnes apo notou kai treis pylōnes apo dysmōn — NA/TR · 13

  • The wall of the city had twelve foundations vvv [bearing] [the] names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

καὶ τὸ τεῖχος τῆς πόλεως ἔχων δώδεκα θεμελίους καὶ ἐπ’ αὐτῶν δώδεκα ὀνόματα τῶν δώδεκα ἀποστόλων τοῦ Ἀρνίου kai to teichos tēs poleōs echōn dōdeka themelious kai ep’ autōn dōdeka onomata tōn dōdeka apostolōn tou Arniou — NA/TR · 14

  • The [angel who] spoke with me had a golden measuring rod to measure the city and its gates and - walls.

Καὶ ὁ λαλῶν μετ’ ἐμοῦ εἶχεν χρυσοῦν μέτρον κάλαμον ἵνα μετρήσῃ τὴν πόλιν καὶ αὐτῆς τοὺς πυλῶνας καὶ αὐτῆς τὸ τεῖχος Kai ho lalōn met’ emou eichen chrysoun metron kalamon hina metrēsē tēn polin kai autēs tous pylōnas kai autēs to teichos — NA/TR · 15

  • The city lies foursquare, with [its] width the same as its length. And he measured the city with the rod, [ and all its dimensions ] were equal— 12,000 {}… stadia in length and width and height -.

καὶ ἡ πόλις κεῖται τετράγωνος καὶ καὶ τὸ πλάτος ὅσον αὐτῆς τὸ μῆκος καὶ ἐμέτρησεν τὴν πόλιν τῷ καλάμῳ ἐστίν ἴσα δώδεκα χιλιάδων ἐπὶ σταδίων τὸ μῆκος καὶ τὸ πλάτος καὶ τὸ ὕψος αὐτῆς kai hē polis keitai tetragōnos kai kai to platos hoson autēs to mēkos kai emetrēsen tēn polin tō kalamō estin isa dōdeka chiliadōn epi stadiōn to mēkos kai to platos kai to hypsos autēs — NA/TR · 16

And he measured its wall [to be] 144 {}… cubits, by the human measure the angel was [using].

καὶ ἐμέτρησεν αὐτῆς τὸ τεῖχος ἑκατὸν τεσσεράκοντα τεσσάρων πηχῶν ἀνθρώπου μέτρον ὅ ἀγγέλου ἐστιν kai emetrēsen autēs to teichos hekaton tesserakonta tessarōn pēchōn anthrōpou metron ho angelou estin — NA/TR · 17

  • The wall was made of jasper, and the city [itself] of pure gold, as pure as glass.

Καὶ αὐτῆς τοῦ τείχους ἡ ἐνδώμησις ἴασπις καὶ ἡ πόλις καθαρὸν χρυσίον ὅμοιον καθαρῷ ὑάλῳ Kai autēs tou teichous hē endōmēsis iaspis kai hē polis katharon chrysion homoion katharō hyalō — NA/TR · 18

The foundations of the city walls were adorned with every kind of precious stone: The first foundation [was] jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,

οἱ θεμέλιοι τοῦ τῆς πόλεως τείχους κεκοσμημένοι παντὶ τιμίῳ λίθῳ ὁ ὁ πρῶτος θεμέλιος ἴασπις ὁ δεύτερος σάπφιρος ὁ τρίτος χαλκηδών ὁ τέταρτος σμάραγδος hoi themelioi tou tēs poleōs teichous kekosmēmenoi panti timiō lithō ho ho prōtos themelios iaspis ho deuteros sapphiros ho tritos chalkēdōn ho tetartos smaragdos — NA/TR · 19

the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, [and] the twelfth amethyst.

ὁ πέμπτος σαρδόνυξ ὁ ἕκτος σάρδιον ὁ ἕβδομος χρυσόλιθος ὁ ὄγδοος βήρυλλος ὁ ἔνατος τοπάζιον ὁ δέκατος χρυσόπρασος ὁ ἑνδέκατος ὑάκινθος ὁ δωδέκατος ἀμέθυστος ho pemptos sardonyx ho hektos sardion ho hebdomos chrysolithos ho ogdoos bēryllos ho enatos topazion ho dekatos chrysoprasos ho hendekatos hyakinthos ho dōdekatos amethystos — NA/TR · 20

And the twelve gates [were] twelve pearls, [with] each - gate vvv consisting of a single pearl. The main street of the city [was] pure gold, as clear as glass.

Καὶ οἱ δώδεκα πυλῶνες δώδεκα μαργαρῖται ἕκαστος εἷς τῶν πυλώνων ἀνὰ ἦν ἐξ ἑνὸς μαργαρίτου καὶ ἡ πλατεῖα τῆς πόλεως καθαρὸν χρυσίον ὡς διαυγής ὕαλος Kai hoi dōdeka pylōnes dōdeka margaritai hekastos heis tōn pylōnōn ana ēn ex henos margaritou kai hē plateia tēs poleōs katharon chrysion hōs diaugēs hyalos — NA/TR · 21

[But] I saw no temple in [the city], because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

Καὶ εἶδον οὐκ ναὸν ἐν αὐτῇ γὰρ ὁ Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὁ Παντοκράτωρ καὶ τὸ Ἀρνίον ἐστιν αὐτῆς ναὸς Kai eidon ouk naon en autē gar ho Kyrios ho Theos ho Pantokratōr kai to Arnion estin autēs naos — NA/TR · 22

And the city has no need of sun [or] moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates [the city], and the Lamb [is] its lamp.

καὶ ἡ πόλις ἔχει οὐ χρείαν τοῦ ἡλίου οὐδὲ τῆς σελήνης ἵνα φαίνωσιν αὐτῇ γὰρ ἡ δόξα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐφώτισεν αὐτήν καὶ τὸ Ἀρνίον αὐτῆς ὁ λύχνος kai hē polis echei ou chreian tou hēliou oude tēs selēnēs hina phainōsin autē gar hē doxa tou Theou ephōtisen autēn kai to Arnion autēs ho lychnos — NA/TR · 23

  • By its light the nations will walk, and into it the kings of the earth will bring their glory.

καὶ διὰ αὐτῆς τοῦ φωτὸς τὰ ἔθνη περιπατήσουσιν καὶ εἰς αὐτήν οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς φέρουσιν αὐτῶν τὴν δόξαν kai dia autēs tou phōtos ta ethnē peripatēsousin kai eis autēn hoi basileis tēs gēs pherousin autōn tēn doxan — NA/TR · 24

  • Its gates vvv vvv will never be shut at the end of the day, because there will be no night there.

καὶ αὐτῆς οἱ πυλῶνες οὐ μὴ κλεισθῶσιν ἡμέρας γὰρ ἔσται οὐκ νὺξ ἐκεῖ kai autēs hoi pylōnes ou mē kleisthōsin hēmeras gar estai ouk nyx ekei — NA/TR · 25

And into [the city] will be brought the glory and honor of the nations.

Καὶ εἰς αὐτήν οἴσουσιν τὴν δόξαν καὶ τὴν τιμὴν τῶν ἐθνῶν Kai eis autēn oisousin tēn doxan kai tēn timēn tōn ethnōn — NA/TR · 26

[But] vvv vvv nothing unclean will ever enter… it, [nor] anyone who practices an abomination [or] a lie, but only… those whose [names] are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

καὶ οὐ μὴ πᾶν κοινὸν εἰσέλθῃ εἰς αὐτὴν καὶ ὁ ποιῶν βδέλυγμα καὶ ψεῦδος εἰ μὴ οἱ γεγραμμένοι ἐν τοῦ Ἀρνίου τῷ βιβλίῳ τῆς ζωῆς kai ou mē pan koinon eiselthē eis autēn kai ho poiōn bdelygma kai pseudos ei mē hoi gegrammenoi en tou Arniou tō bibliō tēs zōēs — NA/TR · 27
