Chapter 5

The Lamb Takes the Scroll

1

Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the [One] seated on the throne. It had writing on both sides… [and was] sealed with seven seals.

2

And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?

καὶ εἶδον ἰσχυρὸν ἄγγελον κηρύσσοντα ἐν μεγάλῃ φωνῇ Τίς ἄξιος λῦσαι αὐτοῦ τὰς σφραγῖδας καὶ ἀνοῖξαι τὸ βιβλίον kai eidon ischyron angelon kēryssonta en megalē phōnē Tis axios lysai autou tas sphragidas kai anoixai to biblion — NA/TR · 2

3

[But] no one in heaven [or] on earth [or] under the earth was able to open the scroll [or] look inside it.

Καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ οὐδὲ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς οὐδὲ ὑποκάτω τῆς γῆς ἐδύνατο ἀνοῖξαι τὸ βιβλίον οὔτε βλέπειν αὐτό Kai oudeis en tō ouranō oude epi tēs gēs oude hypokatō tēs gēs edynato anoixai to biblion oute blepein auto — NA/TR · 3

4

And I began to weep bitterly, because no one was found worthy to open the scroll [or] look inside it.

καὶ ἐγὼ ἔκλαιον πολὺ ὅτι οὐδεὶς εὑρέθη ἄξιος ἀνοῖξαι τὸ βιβλίον οὔτε βλέπειν αὐτό kai egō eklaion poly hoti oudeis heurethē axios anoixai to biblion oute blepein auto — NA/TR · 4

5

Then one of the elders said to me, “{Do} not weep! Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed to open the scroll and its seven seals.

Καὶ εἷς ἐκ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων λέγει μοι Μὴ κλαῖε ἰδοὺ ὁ Λέων ὁ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰούδα ἡ Ῥίζα Δαυίδ ἐνίκησεν ἀνοῖξαι τὸ βιβλίον καὶ αὐτοῦ ἑπτὰ τὰς σφραγῖδας Kai heis ek tōn presbyterōn legei moi Mē klaie idou ho Leōn ho ek tēs phylēs Iouda hē Rhiza Dauid enikēsen anoixai to biblion kai autou hepta tas sphragidas — NA/TR · 5

6

Then I saw a Lamb who appeared to have been slain, standing in [the] center of the throne, [encircled by] the four living creatures and - the elders. [The Lamb] had seven horns and seven eyes, which represent the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

7

And He came and took [the scroll] from the right hand of the [One] seated on the throne.

καὶ ἦλθεν καὶ εἴληφεν ἐκ τῆς δεξιᾶς τοῦ καθημένου ἐπὶ τοῦ θρόνου kai ēlthen kai eilēphen ek tēs dexias tou kathēmenou epi tou thronou — NA/TR · 7

8

  • When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four… elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Καὶ ὅτε ἔλαβεν τὸ βιβλίον τὰ τέσσαρα ζῷα καὶ οἱ εἴκοσι τέσσαρες πρεσβύτεροι ἔπεσαν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Ἀρνίου ἕκαστος ἔχοντες κιθάραν καὶ χρυσᾶς φιάλας γεμούσας θυμιαμάτων αἵ εἰσιν αἱ προσευχαὶ τῶν ἁγίων Kai hote elaben to biblion ta tessara zōa kai hoi eikosi tessares presbyteroi epesan enōpion tou Arniou hekastos echontes kitharan kai chrysas phialas gemousas thymiamatōn hai eisin hai proseuchai tōn hagiōn — NA/TR · 8

9

And they sang a new song -: “Worthy are You to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased for God [those] from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

καὶ ᾄδουσιν καινὴν ᾠδὴν λέγοντες Ἄξιος εἶ λαβεῖν τὸ βιβλίον καὶ ἀνοῖξαι αὐτοῦ τὰς σφραγῖδας ὅτι ἐσφάγης καὶ ἐν σου τῷ αἵματί ἠγόρασας τῷ Θεῷ ἐκ πάσης φυλῆς καὶ γλώσσης καὶ λαοῦ καὶ ἔθνους kai adousin kainēn ōdēn legontes Axios ei labein to biblion kai anoixai autou tas sphragidas hoti esphagēs kai en sou tō haimati ēgorasas tō Theō ek pasēs phylēs kai glōssēs kai laou kai ethnous — NA/TR · 9

10

  • You have made them {to be} a kingdom and priests to [ serve ] our God, and they will reign upon the earth.

The Lamb Exalted

11

Then I looked, and I heard [the] voices of many angels encircling the throne, and the living creatures and the elders. And their number was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands.

12

In a loud voice… they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!

φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγοντες Ἄξιόν ἐστιν τὸ Ἀρνίον τὸ ἐσφαγμένον λαβεῖν τὴν δύναμιν καὶ πλοῦτον καὶ σοφίαν καὶ ἰσχὺν καὶ τιμὴν καὶ δόξαν καὶ εὐλογίαν phōnē megalē legontes Axion estin to Arnion to esphagmenon labein tēn dynamin kai plouton kai sophian kai ischyn kai timēn kai doxan kai eulogian — NA/TR · 12

13

And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that [is] in them, saying: “To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power vvv vvv forever [and] ever!

Καὶ ἤκουσα πᾶν κτίσμα ὃ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὑποκάτω τῆς γῆς καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης ἐστίν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς λέγοντας Τῷ καθημένῳ ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ καὶ τῷ Ἀρνίῳ ἡ εὐλογία καὶ ἡ τιμὴ καὶ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων Kai ēkousa pan ktisma ho en tō ouranō kai epi tēs gēs kai hypokatō tēs gēs kai epi tēs thalassēs estin kai panta ta en autois legontas Tō kathēmenō epi tō thronō kai tō Arniō hē eulogia kai hē timē kai hē doxa kai to kratos eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn — NA/TR · 13

14

And the four living creatures said, “Amen, and the elders fell down and worshiped.
