Chapter 9
The Fifth Trumpet
1
Then the fifth angel sounded [his] trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth, and it was given the key to the pit of the Abyss.
Καὶ ὁ πέμπτος ἄγγελος ἐσάλπισεν καὶ εἶδον ἀστέρα πεπτωκότα ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ εἰς τὴν γῆν καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτῷ ἡ κλεὶς τοῦ φρέατος τῆς ἀβύσσου Kai ho pemptos angelos esalpisen kai eidon astera peptōkota ek tou ouranou eis tēn gēn kai edothē autō hē kleis tou phreatos tēs abyssou — NA/TR · 1

- [The star] opened the pit of the Abyss, and smoke rose out of [it] like [the] smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the pit.
καὶ ἤνοιξεν τὸ φρέαρ τῆς ἀβύσσου καὶ καπνὸς ἀνέβη ἐκ τοῦ φρέατος ὡς καπνὸς μεγάλης καμίνου καὶ ὁ ἥλιος καὶ ὁ ἀὴρ ἐσκοτώθη ἐκ τοῦ καπνοῦ τοῦ φρέατος kai ēnoixen to phrear tēs abyssou kai kapnos anebē ek tou phreatos hōs kapnos megalēs kaminou kai ho hēlios kai ho aēr eskotōthē ek tou kapnou tou phreatos — NA/TR · 2

And out of the smoke, locusts descended on… the earth, and they were given power like vvv [that of] the scorpions of the earth.
Καὶ ἐκ τοῦ καπνοῦ ἀκρίδες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὴν γῆν καὶ αὐταῖς ἐδόθη ἐξουσία ὡς ἔχουσιν ἐξουσίαν οἱ σκορπίοι τῆς γῆς Kai ek tou kapnou akrides exēlthon eis tēn gēn kai autais edothē exousia hōs echousin exousian hoi skorpioi tēs gēs — NA/TR · 3

- They were told not to harm the grass of the earth [or] any plant [or] tree, but only… those… who vvv did not have the seal of God on [their] foreheads.
καὶ αὐταῖς ἐρρέθη ἵνα μὴ ἀδικήσουσιν τὸν χόρτον τῆς γῆς οὐδὲ πᾶν χλωρὸν οὐδὲ πᾶν δένδρον εἰ μὴ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους οἵτινες οὐκ ἔχουσι τὴν σφραγῖδα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπὶ τῶν μετώπων kai autais errethē hina mē adikēsousin ton chorton tēs gēs oude pan chlōron oude pan dendron ei mē tous anthrōpous hoitines ouk echousi tēn sphragida tou Theou epi tōn metōpōn — NA/TR · 4

- [The locusts] were not given power… to kill them, but only to torment [them] [for] five months, and their torment [was] like vvv the stinging of a scorpion.
καὶ αὐτοῖς ἐδόθη μὴ ἵνα ἀποκτείνωσιν αὐτούς ἀλλ’ ἵνα βασανισθήσονται πέντε μῆνας καὶ αὐτῶν ὁ βασανισμὸς ὡς βασανισμὸς ὅταν παίσῃ ἄνθρωπον σκορπίου kai autois edothē mē hina apokteinōsin autous all’ hina basanisthēsontai pente mēnas kai autōn ho basanismos hōs basanismos hotan paisē anthrōpon skorpiou — NA/TR · 5

- In those days men will seek death and vvv vvv will not find it; they will long to die, [but] death will escape… them.
καὶ ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις οἱ ἄνθρωποι ζητήσουσιν τὸν θάνατον καὶ οὐ μὴ εὑρήσουσιν αὐτόν καὶ ἐπιθυμήσουσιν ἀποθανεῖν καὶ ὁ θάνατος φεύγει ἀπ’ αὐτῶν kai en ekeinais tais hēmerais hoi anthrōpoi zētēsousin ton thanaton kai ou mē heurēsousin auton kai epithymēsousin apothanein kai ho thanatos pheugei ap’ autōn — NA/TR · 6

And the locusts looked like horses prepared for battle, [with something] like crowns of gold on their heads; and their faces [were] like [the] faces of men.
Καὶ τὰ τῶν ἀκρίδων ὁμοιώματα ὅμοια ἵπποις ἡτοιμασμένοις εἰς πόλεμον καὶ ὡς ὅμοιοι στέφανοι χρυσῷ ἐπὶ αὐτῶν τὰς κεφαλὰς καὶ αὐτῶν τὰ πρόσωπα ὡς πρόσωπα ἀνθρώπων Kai ta tōn akridōn homoiōmata homoia hippois hētoimasmenois eis polemon kai hōs homoioi stephanoi chrysō epi autōn tas kephalas kai autōn ta prosōpa hōs prosōpa anthrōpōn — NA/TR · 7

- They had hair like [that] of women, and - teeth like [those] of lions.
καὶ εἶχον τρίχας ὡς τρίχας γυναικῶν καὶ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀδόντες ἦσαν ὡς λεόντων kai eichon trichas hōs trichas gynaikōn kai autōn hoi odontes ēsan hōs leontōn — NA/TR · 8

vvv They also had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings [was] like [the] roar of many horses [and] chariots rushing into battle.
καὶ εἶχον θώρακας ὡς θώρακας σιδηροῦς καὶ ἡ φωνὴ τῶν αὐτῶν πτερύγων ὡς φωνὴ πολλῶν ἵππων ἁρμάτων τρεχόντων εἰς πόλεμον kai eichon thōrakas hōs thōrakas sidērous kai hē phōnē tōn autōn pterygōn hōs phōnē pollōn hippōn harmatōn trechontōn eis polemon — NA/TR · 9

- They had tails with stingers like scorpions, vvv vvv vvv [which] had the power to injure people for five months.
καὶ ἔχουσιν οὐρὰς καὶ κέντρα ὁμοίας σκορπίοις καὶ ἐν αὐτῶν ταῖς οὐραῖς αὐτῶν ἡ ἐξουσία ἀδικῆσαι τοὺς ἀνθρώπους πέντε μῆνας kai echousin ouras kai kentra homoias skorpiois kai en autōn tais ourais autōn hē exousia adikēsai tous anthrōpous pente mēnas — NA/TR · 10

They were ruled by… a king, the angel of the Abyss. His name in Hebrew [is] Abaddon, and in Greek vvv [it is] Apollyon.
ἔχουσιν ἐπ’ αὐτῶν βασιλέα τὸν ἄγγελον τῆς ἀβύσσου αὐτῷ ὄνομα Ἑβραϊστί Ἀβαδδών καὶ ἐν τῇ Ἑλληνικῇ ἔχει ὄνομα Ἀπολλύων echousin ep’ autōn basilea ton angelon tēs abyssou autō onoma Hebraisti Abaddōn kai en tē Hellēnikē echei onoma Apollyōn — NA/TR · 11

The first woe has passed. Behold, two woes [are] still to follow…

The Sixth Trumpet

Then the sixth angel sounded [his] trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God
Καὶ ὁ ἕκτος ἄγγελος ἐσάλπισεν καὶ ἤκουσα μίαν φωνὴν ἐκ τῶν τεσσάρων κεράτων τοῦ τοῦ χρυσοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ Kai ho hektos angelos esalpisen kai ēkousa mian phōnēn ek tōn tessarōn keratōn tou tou chrysou thysiastēriou tou enōpion tou Theou — NA/TR · 13

saying to the sixth angel with the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.
λέγοντα τῷ ἕκτῳ ἀγγέλῳ ὁ ἔχων τὴν σάλπιγγα Λῦσον τοὺς τέσσαρας ἀγγέλους τοὺς δεδεμένους ἐπὶ τῷ τῷ μεγάλῳ ποταμῷ Εὐφράτῃ legonta tō hektō angelō ho echōn tēn salpinga Lyson tous tessaras angelous tous dedemenous epi tō tō megalō potamō Euphratē — NA/TR · 14

[So] the four angels who had been prepared for [this] hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind.
καὶ οἱ τέσσαρες ἄγγελοι οἱ ἡτοιμασμένοι εἰς τὴν ὥραν καὶ ἡμέραν καὶ μῆνα καὶ ἐνιαυτόν ἐλύθησαν ἵνα ἀποκτείνωσιν τὸ τρίτον τῶν ἀνθρώπων kai hoi tessares angeloi hoi hētoimasmenoi eis tēn hōran kai hēmeran kai mēna kai eniauton elythēsan hina apokteinōsin to triton tōn anthrōpōn — NA/TR · 15

And the number of mounted troops [was] two hundred million…; I heard their number.
καὶ ὁ ἀριθμὸς τοῦ ἱππικοῦ τῶν στρατευμάτων δισμυριάδες μυριάδων ἤκουσα αὐτῶν τὸν ἀριθμὸν kai ho arithmos tou hippikou tōn strateumatōn dismyriades myriadōn ēkousa autōn ton arithmon — NA/TR · 16

[Now] the horses and riders… in [my] vision looked like this: [The riders] had breastplates [the colors of] fire, sapphire, and sulfur. The heads of the horses [were] like [the] heads of lions, and out of their mouths proceeded fire, smoke, and sulfur.
Καὶ τοὺς ἵππους καὶ τοὺς καθημένους ἐπ’ αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ὁράσει εἶδον οὕτως ἔχοντας θώρακας πυρίνους καὶ ὑακινθίνους καὶ θειώδεις καὶ αἱ κεφαλαὶ τῶν ἵππων ὡς κεφαλαὶ λεόντων καὶ ἐκ αὐτῶν τῶν στομάτων ἐκπορεύεται πῦρ καὶ καπνὸς καὶ θεῖον Kai tous hippous kai tous kathēmenous ep’ autōn en tē horasei eidon houtōs echontas thōrakas pyrinous kai hyakinthinous kai theiōdeis kai hai kephalai tōn hippōn hōs kephalai leontōn kai ek autōn tōn stomatōn ekporeuetai pyr kai kapnos kai theion — NA/TR · 17

A third of mankind was killed by [the] three plagues of fire, - smoke, and sulfur that proceeded from their mouths.
τὸ τρίτον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀπεκτάνθησαν ἀπὸ τούτων τριῶν τῶν πληγῶν ἐκ τοῦ πυρὸς καὶ τοῦ καπνοῦ καὶ τοῦ θείου τοῦ ἐκπορευομένου ἐκ αὐτῶν τῶν στομάτων to triton tōn anthrōpōn apektanthēsan apo toutōn triōn tōn plēgōn ek tou pyros kai tou kapnou kai tou theiou tou ekporeuomenou ek autōn tōn stomatōn — NA/TR · 18

For the power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; indeed, their tails [were] like snakes, having heads with which to inflict harm.
γὰρ ἡ ἐξουσία τῶν ἵππων ἐστιν ἐν αὐτῶν τῷ στόματι καὶ ἐν αὐτῶν ταῖς οὐραῖς γὰρ αὐτῶν αἱ οὐραὶ ὅμοιαι ὄφεσιν ἔχουσαι κεφαλάς καὶ ἐν αὐταῖς ἀδικοῦσιν gar hē exousia tōn hippōn estin en autōn tō stomati kai en autōn tais ourais gar autōn hai ourai homoiai ophesin echousai kephalas kai en autais adikousin — NA/TR · 19

Now the rest of mankind who vvv were not killed by these plagues vvv still did not repent of the works of their hands. vvv vvv They did not stop worshiping demons and idols of - gold, - silver, - bronze, - stone, and wood, which cannot… see [or] hear [or] walk.
Καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἳ οὐκ ἀπεκτάνθησαν ἐν ταύταις ταῖς πληγαῖς οὐδὲ μετενόησαν ἐκ τῶν ἔργων αὐτῶν τῶν χειρῶν ἵνα μὴ προσκυνήσουσιν τὰ δαιμόνια καὶ εἴδωλα τὰ τὰ χρυσᾶ καὶ τὰ ἀργυρᾶ καὶ τὰ χαλκᾶ καὶ τὰ λίθινα καὶ τὰ ξύλινα ἃ δύνανται οὔτε βλέπειν οὔτε ἀκούειν οὔτε περιπατεῖν Kai hoi loipoi tōn anthrōpōn hoi ouk apektanthēsan en tautais tais plēgais oude metenoēsan ek tōn ergōn autōn tōn cheirōn hina mē proskynēsousin ta daimonia kai eidōla ta ta chrysa kai ta argyra kai ta chalka kai ta lithina kai ta xylina ha dynantai oute blepein oute akouein oute peripatein — NA/TR · 20

Furthermore, vvv they did not repent of their murder, - - sorcery, - - sexual immorality, [and] - theft.
καὶ οὐ μετενόησαν ἐκ αὐτῶν τῶν φόνων οὔτε ἐκ αὐτῶν τῶν φαρμάκων οὔτε ἐκ αὐτῶν τῆς πορνείας οὔτε ἐκ αὐτῶν τῶν κλεμμάτων kai ou metenoēsan ek autōn tōn phonōn oute ek autōn tōn pharmakōn oute ek autōn tēs porneias oute ek autōn tōn klemmatōn — NA/TR · 21
