Chapter 20
1
And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

And he answered and said unto them, +w I will|strong=“G2065”+w* +w also|strong=“G2504”+w* +w ask|strong=“G2065”+w* +w you|strong=“G5209”+w* +w one|strong=“G1520”+w* +w thing|strong=“G3056”+w*; +w and|strong=“G2532”+w* +w answer|strong=“G2036”+w* +w me|strong=“G3427”+w*:

+w The baptism|strong=“G0908”+w* +w of John|strong=“G2491”+w*, +w was it|strong=“G2258”+w* +w from|strong=“G1537”+w* +w heaven|strong=“G3772”+w*, +w or|strong=“G2228”+w* +w of|strong=“G1537”+w* +w men|strong=“G0444”+w*?

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

Then began he to speak to the people this parable; +w A certain|strong=“G5100”+w* +w man|strong=“G0444”+w* +w planted|strong=“G5452”+w* +w a vineyard|strong=“G0290”+w*, +w and|strong=“G2532”+w* +w let|strong=“G1554”+w* +w it|strong=“G0846”+w* +w forth|strong=“G1554”+w* +w to husbandmen|strong=“G1092”+w*, +w and|strong=“G2532”+w* +w went into a far country|strong=“G0589”+w* +w for a long|strong=“G2425”+w* +w time|strong=“G5550”+w*.

+w But|strong=“G1161”+w* +w when the husbandmen|strong=“G1092”+w* +w saw|strong=“G1492”+w* +w him|strong=“G0846”+w*, +w they reasoned|strong=“G1260”+w* +w among|strong=“G4314”+w* +w themselves|strong=“G1438”+w*, +w saying|strong=“G3004”+w*, +w This|strong=“G3778”+w* +w is|strong=“G2076”+w* +w the heir|strong=“G2818”+w*: +w come|strong=“G1205”+w*, +w let us kill|strong=“G0615”+w* +w him|strong=“G0846”+w*, +w that|strong=“G2443”+w* +w the inheritance|strong=“G2817”+w* +w may be|strong=“G1096”+w* +w ours|strong=“G2257”+w*.

+w So|strong=“G2532”+w* +w they cast|strong=“G1544”+w* +w him|strong=“G0846”+w* +w out of|strong=“G1854”+w* +w the vineyard|strong=“G0290”+w*, +w and killed|strong=“G0615”+w* +add him+add*. +w What|strong=“G5101”+w* +w therefore|strong=“G3767”+w* +w shall|strong=“G4160”+w* +w the lord|strong=“G2962”+w* +w of the vineyard|strong=“G0290”+w* +w do|strong=“G4160”+w* +w unto them|strong=“G0846”+w*?

j +w He shall come|strong=“G2064”+w* +w and|strong=“G2532”+w* +w destroy|strong=“G0622”+w* +w these|strong=“G5128”+w* +w husbandmen|strong=“G1092”+w*, +w and|strong=“G2532”+w* +w shall give|strong=“G1325”+w* +w the vineyard|strong=“G0290”+w* +w to others|strong=“G0243”+w*. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

And he beheld them, and said, +w What|strong=“G5101”+w* +w is|strong=“G2076”+w* +w this|strong=“G5124”+w* +w then|strong=“G3767”+w* +w that|strong=“G3588”+w* +w is written|strong=“G1125”+w*, +w The stone|strong=“G3037”+w* +w which|strong=“G3739”+w* +w the builders|strong=“G3618”+w* +w rejected|strong=“G0593”+w*, +w the same|strong=“G3778”+w* +w is become|strong=“G1096”+w* +w the|strong=“G1519”+w* +w head|strong=“G2776”+w* +w of the corner|strong=“G1137”+w*?

+w Whosoever|strong=“G3956”+w* +w shall fall|strong=“G4098”+w* +w upon|strong=“G1909”+w* +w that|strong=“G1565”+w* +w stone|strong=“G3037”+w* +w shall be broken|strong=“G4917”+w*; +w but|strong=“G1161”+w* +w on|strong=“G1909”+w* +w whomsoever|strong=“G3739”+w* +w it shall fall|strong=“G4098”+w*, +w it will grind|strong=“G3039”+w* +w him|strong=“G0846”+w* +w to powder|strong=“G3039”+w*.

¶ And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or no?

But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, +w Why|strong=“G5101”+w* +w tempt ye|strong=“G3985”+w* +w me|strong=“G3165”+w*?

And he said unto them, +w Render|strong=“G0591”+w* +w therefore|strong=“G5106”+w* +w unto Cæsar|strong=“G2541”+w* +w the things|strong=“G3588”+w* +w which be Cæsar’s|strong=“G2541”+w*, +w and|strong=“G2532”+w* +w unto God|strong=“G2316”+w* +w the things|strong=“G3588”+w* +w which be God’s|strong=“G2316”+w*.

And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

¶ Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
29
There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
30
And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
31
And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.

Last of all the woman died also.

Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

¶ Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.

¶ Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
